Video Capture in Windows 10

In some of my previous posts, I wanted to create a .gif animated image using a PC with Windows 10, but couldn’t without installing third-party software. Because I didn’t have administrator privileges to the computer I was using (in lab), I was forced to record the animation using my iPhone to record the display.

I knew there had to be a better way! After doing a little bit of digging around the internet, I found that Windows 10 has built in software enabling the user to capture on-screen video using the Game Bar. Although its original intention is to video capture gaming sessions, it works as a great as an alternative use for the purposes of posting Processing + Python works.

How to use:

  1. Press and hold the Windows Key while pressing G.
  2. Begin recording using the button or press and hold the Windows Key + Alt while pressing R.
  3. While recording, you can further minimize the window by pressing R again.
  4. To end recording, simply click the record button or press and hold the Windows Key + Alt while pressing R again.
  5. To exit, simply click outside of the window or press Esc.

Note: Game Bar will record the window you currently have open. To verify, attempt to move the bar outside of the given window. If you cannot move the bar outside of the window, that window is the one that will be recorded. You can move the bar around using the two dashes on the right side of the bar. Also, by default, it will save your video to the Videos folder on your PC.

Now you have a video you can then convert to a .gif. :)
