Imagine you’re a chef trying to perfect a recipe. You might make two slightly different versions of the same dish and ask people which one tastes better. That’s essentially what A/B testing is — but instead of recipes, we’re testing different ways to ask AI models questions to get better answers.

If you’ve ever wondered, “Is there a better way to phrase this prompt?” or “Why does my AI sometimes give amazing responses and sometimes… not so much?” — this article is for you. I’m going to show you exactly how to A/B test your prompts using a simple Python script that anyone can understand and use.

What Is Prompt A/B Testing?

Think of prompts like instructions you give to a very smart but literal-minded assistant. The way you phrase your instructions can dramatically change the quality of what you get back.

For example, let’s say you want an AI to come up with product names for shoes that can fit any foot size. You could ask it two different ways:

Version A (Simple approach):

prompt_A = ""
"Product description: A pair of shoes that can fit any foot size.
Seed words: adaptable, fit, omni-fit.
Product names:"
""
