The Generative AI war is heating up and after back to back releases of some great text-generation models recently (Llama 3.1, GPT-4o mini), we have got a big release in the image generation arena as well i.e. Flux by black-forest-labs (the team behind models like Stable Diffusion). The model is open-sourced (not all variants) and is available on HuggingFace to use.

Talking a little about the model variants, it is released in three versions

FLUX.1 [pro]

  • Purpose: The most advanced version, offering top-tier performance in image generation.
  • Features: Closed-source, available only through an API, providing state-of-the-art image quality and diversity. Designed for professional and commercial use.
  • Pricing: API access is priced per image, reflecting its premium capabilities.

FLUX.1 [dev]

  • Purpose: Base model, open-sourced with a non-commercial license, ideal for community development and experimentation.
  • Features: High-quality image generation with a focus on prompt adherence and visual detail, distilled from FLUX.1 [pro].
  • Availability: For non-commercial use, allowing users to explore and build on the model’s capabilities.

FLUX.1 [schnell]

  • Purpose: A faster, distilled version of the base model, operating up to 10 times faster than FLUX.1 [dev].
  • Features: Tailored for speed and efficiency, suitable for high-demand applications needing rapid image generation.
  • Licensing: Available under the Apache 2.0 license for both personal and commercial use, ideal for local development and deployment.

So, in short

Schnell is the fastest followed by Dev and than Pro

Quality wise, Pro>Dev>Schnell (even outputs from schnell are great to be honest)

Schnell is the lightest followed by Dev and Pro

Schnell & Dev are available on HuggingFace for free use. Pro is paid

Now, its time to see some comparisons of Flux (Schnell) with other existing SOTA models like Stable Diffusion, MidJourney & Dalle3.

Flux Dev vs Flux Schnell

MidJourney vs Flux

As you must have seen, Flux Schnell produces more subtle images while MidJourney has more vibrant colors. Also, the detailing in MidJourney appears a little better. But remember, this is Flux’s weakest model that we tried !

Dalle3 vs Flux

Stable Diffusion vs Flux

Flux Schnell looks better than SD3 Medium to me atleast. What are your views?

With this, its a wrap, lets catchup soon
