Working remotely is here to stay. With education also becoming more remote in the last year, it might be a good option to look at some educational content to boost your skills. In this article, I will review the top 8 most popular courses on Coursera in 2021. Most of them are about data science and machine learning.

Best online courses on Coursera in 2021 — data science, machine learning, IT

Top 8 Courses on Coursera

I’ve chosen the following top 8 courses in 2021:

  1. IBM Data Science by IBM
  2. Machine Learning by Stanford
  3. Google IT Automation with Python by Google
  4. The Science of Well-Being by Yale
  5. Python for Everybody by University of Michigan
  6. Google IT Support by Google
  7. Deep Learning by deeplearning.ai
  8. Data Science by Johns Hopkins University

Let’s now discuss them one by one.

IBM Data Science by IBM

Data Science has been ranked as one of the hottest professions and the demand for data practitioners is booming and this course on Data Science is definitely my favourite. And it generally shows how amazing Coursera is as a platform.

This program consists of 9 courses that will teach you skills crucial for a data science job like: open source tools and libraries, methodologies, Python, databases, SQL, data visualization, data analysis, and machine learning.

It’s really a great entry-point for anyone into Data Science, even if you don’t know how to code. Many interactive exercises will help you write your first lines of code.

Machine Learning by Stanford

This course by Andrew Ng, a co-founder of Coursera, has initiated Coursera as a massive educational platform and it’s always worth taking if you’re looking for machine learning knowledge.

The course assumes that you already have some mathematical knowledge (linear algebra in particular), but other than that it’s fairly self-cointained and gives you all the foundations.

It’s worth taking to learn some of the best machine learning practices in the industry.

Google IT Automation with Python by Google

This new beginner-level, six-course certificate, developed by Google, is designed to provide IT professionals with in-demand skills — including Python, Git, and IT automation — that can help you advance your career.

Knowing how to write code to solve problems and automate solutions is a crucial skill for anybody in IT. Python, in particular, is now the most in-demand programming language by employers.

This program builds on your IT foundations to help you take your career to the next level. It’s designed to teach you how to program with Python and how to use Python to automate common system administration tasks. You’ll also learn to use Git and GitHub, troubleshoot and debug complex problems, and apply automation at scale by using configuration management and the Cloud.

The Science of Well-Being by Yale

Mental health is especially important right now in 2021.

In this course you will engage in a series of challenges designed to increase your own happiness and build more productive habits. As preparation for these tasks, Professor Laurie Santos reveals misconceptions about happiness, annoying features of the mind that lead us to think the way we do, and the research that can help us change. You will ultimately be prepared to successfully incorporate a specific wellness activity into your life.

Python for Everybody by University of Michigan

This Specialization will introduce fundamental programming concepts including data structures, networked application program interfaces, and databases, using the Python programming language. In the Capstone Project, you’ll use the technologies learned throughout the Specialization to design and create your own applications for data retrieval, processing, and visualization.

Google IT Support by Google

This 5-course certificate, developed by Google, includes innovative curriculum designed to prepare you for an entry-level role in IT support. A job in IT can mean in-person or remote help desk work in a small business or at a global company like Google. The program is part of Grow with Google, a Google initiative to help create economic opportunities for all Americans.

Through a mix of video lectures, quizzes, and hands-on labs and widgets, the program will introduce you to troubleshooting, customer service, networking, operating systems, system administration and security. You’ll hear from Googlers with unique backgrounds whose own foundation in IT support served as a jumping off point for their careers. By dedicating ~5 hours a week, you can complete in under six months.

Deep Learning by deeplearning.ai

If you want to break into AI, this Specialization will help you do so. Deep Learning is one of the most highly sought after skills in tech. This is another course/specialization by Andrew Ng, co-founder of Coursera and a Stanford professor and it’s definitely worth taking.

In five courses, you will learn the foundations of Deep Learning, understand how to build neural networks, and learn how to lead successful machine learning projects. You will learn about Convolutional networks, RNNs, LSTM, Adam, Dropout, BatchNorm, Xavier/He initialization, and more. You will work on case studies from healthcare, autonomous driving, sign language reading, music generation, and natural language processing. You will master not only the theory, but also see how it is applied in industry. You will practice all these ideas in Python and in TensorFlow, which we will teach.

You will also hear from many top leaders in Deep Learning, who will share with you their personal stories and give you career advice.

Data Science by Johns Hopkins University

This course covers the concepts and tools you’ll need throughout the entire data science pipeline, from asking the right kinds of questions to making inferences and publishing results. In the final Capstone Project, you’ll apply the skills learned by building a data product using real-world data. At completion, students will have a portfolio demonstrating their mastery of the material.

Coursera Self-Paced Courses

This is it!

I hope you’ve found something interesting!

Remember that Coursera gives you an option of an annual subscription (Netflix-like) to binge on educational content.

With this subscription, you can for example build the entire university-level programme on Data Science for less than $400. And also you can complete most of the courses listed above (but not all courses are included in the subscription).

Happy learning!
