How to overlay data on maps easily using SAS Studio
Maps are easy in SAS Studio
Motivation
Every year, many of my friends ask me about the safest NYC borough, where they can rent a place for their children. Many students come to NYC for summer training or work. I live in NY but not NYC. Therefore, I always go for the data to answer this question and added the procedure in my book, “Learn Data Science Using SAS Studio,” published by Apress in 2020.
Maps
Displaying data on a map adds new perspectives. It can tell a whole story all by itself. SAS Studio made showing data on maps easy. Moreover, customizing the map with colors and bubbles adds new dimensions to your data. This section will walk you through the process using real-life data. It will show you in step-by-step how to download the data and prepare it to be displayed on a map.
Bubble Map
The Bubble Map task creates a map that is overlaid with a bubble plot. For this example, we shall use crime data for New York City to create a bubble map showing the crime rate in the different NYC boroughs in 2018. The data is available through the NYC Open Data Project website.
You will find the data file in the “Datasets” folder; the file is named NYPD_Complaint_Data_Current__Year_To_Date.csv. Or, you can download the dataset from this URL: https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Public-Safety/NYPD-Complaint-Data-Current-Year-To-Date-/5uac-w243/data [1].
