Why is there a need for an unified data governance entity?
In this past decade, with the explosion of Big Data, the need for quality data and data integrity has become a staple in any aspiring enterprise.
This is where Azure Purview comes in. The ability to govern data across all points of the enterprise is something that has been greatly sought after.
Azure Purview is a data governance solution that helps you manage and govern data, easily create data lineage and manage data entities via glossary terms enabling consumers to find valuable, quality and trustworthy data.
Features of Purview

Data Lineage
Azure Purview currently is able to generate data lineage for entities that already have preexisting metadata, but fret not, for there are a good amount of libraries available to assist in the creation of manual data lineage entities. E.g. pyapacheatlas
Purview is still in its initial stages of development and more features are being added to its existing capabilities by both internal developers(features) and external (libraries) alike.
Glossary Terms
Purview gives you the capability to associate data with business logic. Allowing you to tag any incoming data sets with glossary terms so that when queried for, only those pertinent to your search will show up. This allows for the quick identification and classification of new data sets and gives you access to data that matters for your needs.
Powering Business Insights
Azure Purview can be used in association with a host of other Microsoft products such as Power BI and Azure Data Factories to collect data lineage information and quickly generate insights regarding the data you are processing.
Closing Thoughts
As mentioned above, Purview is still in its infancy of developmental potential and I can see it becoming an even greater factor of producing meaningful insights in the near future. The need for clean and quality data is not going to stop anytime soon and Purview will be a driving force in providing that to the end user.
