An evening with Data Ventures
by Hollie Kane
On the 30th of August, we held an event which had two goals:
- set the expectations of the direction we’re heading and expectations around how different this is for government.
- find ourselves some equally ambitious partners to work with us on that journey — by highlighting some of the ventures we’re working on.
We were expecting only to have 20–30 people interested. We wildly underestimated how many smart people were keen on smart work! There were over 100* registrations for the event and another 79* for the live stream. We were humbled by the interest.
We covered off four ventures, they were:
- Stats Assurance — an approach to measure the credibility behind the generate your official statistics.
- Solomo — the here and there of our nation
- Topdown — seeing New Zealand from 7,000 feet to make better decisions
- WhatsLeft — helping small businesses stay on top of their cash-flow!
At the event, we counted over 60 people, with over 50 staying until the very end and then half of those people staying to talk to us further. Putting a lense towards our stream, there were 15* live viewers, with an overall 75* unique views since the event.
Following the event, we emailed all people who registered interest for the event. Again, a very highly engaged audience (as of posting this), with 119* people opening the email and 43.7%* visiting either the slides or video.

Frankly, after all of this activity, we couldn’t be happier.
P.S. If you didn’t catch the event, we have our slides from the night and the video recorded so you can re-live it like you were there.
Next steps
If you are interested in an opportunity to work with us on one of our ventures, or think we can add value to something you’re already doing, what we need from you:
- Let us know what venture(s) you are interested in, or what of your own ventures you’re involved in.
- Something about yourself, nothing customised to us, even a link to a website is enough.
- Then send us an e-mail (dataventures@stats.govt.nz) with those bits of information.
As we asked at the event (see slide #41) the next deadline is 7th of September @ 12pm in the stages of getting some joint venture partnerships started.
