Essential takeaways from Edward Tufte’s one-day course

I was lucky to attend Professor Edward Tufte’s “Presenting Data and Information” one-day course in Portland. It was absolutely refreshing in this busy design world where too much artwork and changing design practices compete for our attention.

Dr. Tufte is a pioneer of data visualization and a dedicated researcher in information design and has established a systematic framework of analytic thinking for graphical presentation, for both creators and consumers. The four books he wrote (The visual display of quantitative information, Envisioning Information, Visual Explanation, Beautiful Evidence) cover the design strategies and fundamental principles underlying information representation with elegant examples across time and space.

After attending, I wanted to share my takeaways as a data visualization practitioner with the design community. Inflected by my personal experiences, I have absorbed and reformed the ideas into 3 key points, which in my opinion are essential…
