Let’s face it, day-to-day operations at any business is mostly just a bunch of people making lots of small decisions while doing stuff. Their decisions are typically rooted in some kind of answers to questions like: Which leads are actually promising?, What type of ads perform? Which channels work?, Why are 50+ year olds churning? and so on. Typically, data science have a meager impact —instead it is the infallible gut-feeling that guides their questions, answers, and actions.

So why did they hire you? Well, they know that data science vastly outperforms any gut-feeling, and they want to stay alive. Thus, now it is your job to constantly fight feelings with super-annoying facts, and it is your job to generate new clever metrics and maintain dbt schemas so they can dig into some number of their own. But, is this what the business really wants? Is this what they really need?

Stop pushing data-literacy, build tools instead

If your goal is to guide decisions with facts, there is an alternative to heated meetings and pushing dashboards. Instead, you can build intelligent tools that surface live actionable insight and advice directly to people in the channels they already use.

To explain what we mean, imagine that you are working on the cliche churn problem and you are starting to get some grip on the factors leading to churn. Or, say that you are working with sales data and is starting to understand what promising leads look like. How do you continue from here?

We argue that you should build a tool that automatically fetches CRM data, performs the analysis, and spits out insight and advice directly on say Slack or Teams.

Then, you no longer require your audience to fight feelings. Nor do they need to dig into any dashboards. Instead, you lean into the human urge of taking immediate action. The impact difference is just insane.

Not the same old stuff

Now I bet you might tell me all about how your company has been launching projects to build these kinds of tools for years already. How many of them ultimately failed to provide any value, that they became insanely expensive to build, and that they have to be integrated in this or that way for anyone to care.

That is true. Tons of companies have accepted that they need big software teams to create such tools, and too many high-risk projects have been attempted.

But, this is exactly why we started Databutton.

We want to enable you to build such tools insanely fast and without needing a dev team. We want to enable you to iterate quickly and prove value. Then, your company can choose whether to invest in a big dev team to make it shiny, integrated, and what not.

Introducing Databutton

Databutton is an all online workspace where you can rapidly build full-stack web applications — all in Python.

You can iterate right in your browser and see updates live with hot-reloading. When you are happy with your app, you can publish and share it with the click of a button. Thus:

  • No more wrestling with a local dev setup and python environments.
  • No time spent on deployment, auth, and keeping it up.
  • Share your app to decision makers and others with the click of a button.
  • Super-easy to pull collaborators into the space where you are working.

And yes, the basics are in order. You can use any Python package you want, code is versioned, and there is a secrets store to manage your secrets.

In Databutton, you write front-ends using Streamlit,

You write back-ends in pure Python,

Databutton even comes with storage included,

Databutton is currently in a free closed beta and we would love it if you check us out and provide some candid feedback!
