How to Use NFTs for Events

For our 5th DATAcated Conference (March 1, 2022), I wanted to do something unique -> so I decided to create an NFT-Non Fungible Token, that will be provided to all attendees. This was in the form of a POAP — Proof of Attendance Protocol. A POAP is a unique virtual badge (NFT) that is supported by a cryptographic record. In this quick article, I’ll walk through the steps required to create and distribute POAPs.

Why use POAPs?

POAPs let event organizers to better engage with their audiences by providing a customized experience. POAPs offer special designs and allow for a range of integrated services such as private chat rooms, raffles and more.

How does it work?

Event organizers can create their own event on the POAP platform to customize designs and products they will offer attendees. Users should be on the lookout for QR codes in POAP sponsored events in order to collect badges and participate in different activities.

How much does issuing POAPs cost?

Nothing; all costs are covered by POAP, so it’s free both for issuers and end users.

Ready to create your first POAP?

Step 1: Go to https://app.poap.xyz/admin/events/new

Step 2: Create a PNG image (Recommended: measures 500x500px, round shape, size less than 200KB) that will commemorate your event — this will be your ‘badge’. Below is the badge we used for the DATAcated Conference:

Step 3: After completing the form, you will receive an email with the instructions on how to distribute your POAPs. You will get your claim numbers within 24 hours (an exact number of claim codes can be requested in the event creation form). I personally opted for using a QR code for distributing the POAPs. This is the QR code that was sent — it was enabled for use for a few weeks after the event has passed and was really easy to send out via email after the event.

Claiming POAPs

When you attend a POAP-sponsored event, the organizer will distribute claim codes in the form of QR codes or URLs. Scan the QR code or enter the URL in your browser to claim the POAP using your Ethereum address, or enter your email to reserve the POAP so you can claim it at a later time.

Conclusion

POAPs are fairly simple to create and can help your virtual or physical event stand out from others. It doesn’t cost anything (other than a few minutes of your time to fill out the form and design the badge). They are meant to be used as a recording of various experiences and can be collected via email or crypto wallets. If you still have questions, they have a great FAQ section that should be helpful.
