Datasets Digest: Department Store Sales | NBA players’ birthplaces | Game of Thrones deaths
Happy New Year! For our first Datasets Digest of 2017 we’re bringing you datasets with some sweet data visualizations. Winter is coming, so snuggle up on the couch with some cocoa as you dive into these datasets.
Department store sales
via @retail
Despite a strong holiday shopping season, department stores are having a rough start to the year, with Macy’s and several others recently announcing closings of many store locations. Looking at the data we can see how this trend has played out over the past few decades, painting a bleak outlook for physical department store locations as more consumers choose to shop online.
NBA players’ birthplaces
via @gmoney
The visualization in this dataset shows the top NBA player-producing states, adjusted by state populations. Our nation’s capital ranks 19th for total number of players (69), but looking at the data as a proportion per capita, D.C. blows the other states out of the water.
Game of Thrones deaths
via @aendrew
In Game of Thrones, an episode rarely passes without a handful of gory deaths–it is known! The visualization in this dataset displays the distribution of deaths throughout each season of the show, and you can see that the finale for each season also tends to be the finale for many characters’ lives.
