3 Factors to Thought Leadership
WITH SO MANY PEOPLE FIGHTING TO HAVE THEIR VOICES HEARD, WHAT DOES IT ACTUALLY TAKE TO STAND OUT? THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE… THOUGHT LEADERSHIP.
Some will argue that it’s your follower count–others will say it’s what makes you unique. But this has absolutely nothing to do with your current following or the fact that you ARE unique (because we’re all unique).
In a noisy world where it feels as though everyone is yelling on top of each other, there are 3 factors that go into making yourself heard…
PRESENCE, INFLUENCE, AND IMPACT.
These are also the same 3 factors that if mastered, will elevate you into thought leadership.
Being a thought leader is about being recognized as a person whose ideas, opinions and views are seen as authoritative–and today, this is really the only way to experience purpose and profit. If you have a purpose–a message that you’re yearning to share–a movement that you’re here to ignite–and you’re determined to create a thriving life around it, thought leadership is your next step.
Presence, influence, and impact are each in their own way, incredibly powerful. But things shift dramatically when you master all three. Your following will automatically grow, doors will begin to open, and new opportunities will come your way. Just think of thought leadership as the vehicle for bringing your message to the masses.
Your presence has the power to repel or attract your audience–and trust me, you want to both repel and attract. Thought leadership isn’t about saying what everyone wants to hear–it’s about sharing your truth, opinions, and ideas, and not everyone is going to agree with what you have to say. This is why presence is so important.
Just think of presence as energy… people feel you as you enter a room, step onto a stage, or enter a boardroom. They sense what you’re about, without you even speaking. Presence is about how you carry yourself and your energy; it’s about how you show up and who you’re being in any given moment. The most common misconception about presence is that it has to be BIG; that you have to take up as much physical space as possible by speaking louder and by doing things to grab peoples’ attention… but that’s not the case.
For example, when speaking on stage, many people find it unnatural to speak with their hands or create big movements. For some, this works really well because it’s innately their behavior, but for those who try to mimic this to boost their presence, it does not translate well and the audience will automatically disengage.
Presence is about taking up space, but that space isn’t physical–it’s energetic.
Presence is about embodying everything that you preach and teach; it’s about BEING your ideas, thoughts, and opinions; it’s about walking the fucking talk. And this is a practice that you must integrate into your life–one that you must continue to improve upon because as you continue to evolve, you’ll have to continue to dive deeper into BEING the exact representation of your work. Your presence is a result of BEING the embodiment of your purpose, vision, and mission. Simply put, your presence is “who you be”, and it’s what people experience when they come into contact with you, offline and online.
MASTER YOUR PRESENCE, AND YOU’LL MASTER YOUR MOVEMENT.
The next factor is influence, and the word itself tends to leave a poor taste in the mouths of many. You want your ideas to be accepted… you want your products or services to be in high-demand… and yet you cringe when you hear the word “influence”?
Influence is necessary; it’s about having the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something. Just think of this as the principle of causation, otherwise known as cause and effect. The ideas, thoughts, opinions, and even products and services that you put out into the world are the cause, and how people react is the effect. Your influence has the power to sway people from their current direction and lead them into another.
Influence sells. It creates movements, grows brands, and cultivates a following. With influence, you have the power to bring more people into your movement which helps to create a bigger impact. As such, influence is imperative for thought leadership.
With the rise of social media, being an “influencer” holds value. You can score book deals, sponsorships, and funding if you’re seen as an influencer online. What’s important to understand is that all thought leaders are influencers, but not all influencers are thought leaders. The difference lies in the substance of what is being shared and communicated, and the ripple of impact that follows.
In order to create influence, you must have ideas and opinions that create a lasting effect on your audience; ideas and opinions that bring people into your orbit and make them feel as though they can relate or even better yet… that they belong.
WHEN YOU INCREASE YOUR LEVEL OF INFLUENCE, YOU ATTRACT MORE PEOPLE INTO YOUR ORBIT.
The third and final factor to standing out as a thought leader is impact, which is similar to influence, in that it’s about having an effect on others. But here’s the difference…
Having influence is taking someone by the hand and leading them to a specific destination. That person can choose to be led by you, or they can choose to let go and continue on their path.
Creating impact is giving someone punch in the shoulder. That person could perceive your punch as a friendly greeting or an attack.
Impact is neither positive or negative–but it is perceived as such by those who experience it. Even if you’re intentions are good, there will be those who perceive your impact as negative. And when it comes to thought leadership, you can be a thought leader while being perceived as someone with a negative impact… because you’re still creating an impact.
Impact is the impression you leave on someone or something, and in a bigger way, it’s the impression you’re determined to leave in our world. What impression do you leave on those who come into contact with you–whether it’s online or offline? What is the significance of your mission and your movement?
THE IMPACT OF YOUR MESSAGE WILL DETERMINE THE OUTCOME OF YOUR MISSION.
If you’re seeking to stand out, be heard, and share your message while building a thriving life for yourself, thought leadership is your next step.
Stop fighting to be heard, and start rising above the noise.
