Have you ever wondered how a page or a website comes first as a result whenever we search something on google? This is exactly what we learn in SEO. But, what is SEO?
As usual, Wikipedia does a poor job at explaining: Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the online visibility of a website or a web page in a web search’s engine unpaid results — often referred to as “natural”, “organic”, or “earned” results.
I want a definition that I can understand and remember! Here’s one:
Search Engine optimization refers to the process of optimising a website/webpage in a way that it appears first on the search engine’s result page. Optimising can be done in the form of image building, link sharing, keyword researching etc.
In SEO, there is no shortage of practices to be followed for optimisation, however, those practices should be in line with the search engine’s ranking algorithms.( In our case Google, since we all use it so frequently)

1.High Quality content:
Start thinking of yourself as a user and not a marketer. How would you want your content to be? Some unnecessary diverted crap or good quality, user-friendly content satisfying your search query? Obviously the latter one. Right?
This is what every marketer should aim for. He should put himself in the shoes of a user and accordingly design the content. The content should be so engaging that it should create a long-lasting impression in the minds of the user. Below are some useful strategies for building quality content:
Write about something that people care about.
Add personalisation and relatable examples for easy understanding.
Try to use as simple as possible language.
Write in an out of the box manner.
2. KEYWORD RESEARCH:
Keywords are the words that define your content i.e. what your content is about. Keywords play a major role in the process of optimization. It is more of a do or die situation.
Whatever user searches should exactly match with your page title/heading, so as to at least get a chance to showcase your content inside the webpage. You must be wondering how is it possible? I would say everything is possible especially when talking about this century. There are various tools that help you in getting a perfect keyword like google keyword planning, keyword trends, uber suggest etc. These tools do an amazing job by providing the statistics of what words people use for searching, what is the search volume of a particular keyword etc and helps in choosing a go-to keyword for the blog.
3. IMAGES :
Images, when used with care, enhances the overall outlook and understanding of the content much faster than texts.
Let’s take an example of this: This image is explaining the process of a good website design strategy.
Now compare this with: “ website designing follows three major steps. These steps include optimising SEO for ranking purpose, after optimising comes the designing part. It should be designed in a way that it grabs the attention of crawlers and users and then comes the building a solid infrastructure part to create a long-lasting impression.”
Was the image appealing and easy to understand or text? The image.
However one needs to note that, stuffing of images for the sake of it also doesn’t work because that leads to quality deterioration of the content. So, there should be a balance of both- Quality content with Quality images.
4. Active on Social Media platforms:
Simply being active, sharing blogs constantly on relevant topics also helps you in driving traffic but the platforms that you are considering for sharing should be authoritative. Some advisable platforms to use are Quora, SlideShare, bloggers, etc
5. Guest posting:
Guest posting is basically the practice of sharing your post to another website so as to build relationships, exposure, authority, and links. Guest posting helps in establishing a relationship with the blogger hosting your post, taps into their audience for additional exposure, and helps you gain traffic for your website
6. Focus on long term view:
Things take time to work. In order to build traffic, you should not map your website in a way for temporary satisfaction that a user visits your website for only one time or so. The goal should be to build an audience base that will get compounded every now and then and will never go away.
7. Constructing Mobile friendly sites:
The above points are useless if you are targeting just one section of people- those who use desktop. For mass reach, you have to think big. Today, 63.4% of people browse through mobile phones. So, it is like not targeting more than half of the audience.
To have a mass reach, you need to take into account all users and therefore, building a mobile-friendly website in this sense is a must.
Along with these ways, constantly reviewing your’s as well as your competitor’s blogs/sites and updating accordingly helps in going a long way. And ultimately, researching user’s needs and demands and providing them what they need is the key to attracting traffic and increase ranking.
