Designing the Physical Internet.

Seamless experience will be the bridge between the digital and physical worlds.

The Physical Internet Will Transform Your Life, But First It Needs Great Design

Access to human knowledge and wisdom is changing in an unprecedented way, and this is the fascinating topic we shall explore in the sixth article of this series on the future of the internet.

Over 2018 and into 2019 we’ve seen an uptick of organization sharing the ‘hows’ of implementing AI systems into IoT; paralleling an increase in level of complexity and sophistication in the experience designs that drive them.

The rise of the Ambient & Spatial User Experience.

With Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality, and now with Extended Reality (XR) there is a growing need for design and experience specialization as ambient & spatial user experience. Along with this should and will come specialized certifications, designations and degrees that will all support the skills to craft engaging blended intelligent and interactive environments, where content and technology are mixed in useful interactions across a spectrum of technologies.

Going beyond the technology-first approach common in the early stages of every wave of the internet there will be a need for Epic Storytelling of Physical Internet.

More of the same: Internet interface always sucks in the early internet waves.

Designing for the {Physical} Internet first.

in 2019 we are starting to see designs and experiences take a front row over technologies driving the physical internet.

The Art of the Science of the Next Internet

Imagine yourself as a digital artist selling great creative works; a modern equivalent to Da Vinci masterpiece, What masterpieces as digital artists could we create around us? How to combine the color pallet of technology we have access too; new colors, senses, 3-dimensional immersion, sound and vibration all add to the emotions art can invoke; and all are possible with the expert hands guiding these combinations.

In the Physical Internet, the fourth wave of internet we can create digital equivalents of Great Master Paintings, Wooden airplanes, spiral helicopters, and detailed anatomy sketches; wow, the future.

Responsive Designs

The Great thing about the Physical Internet is that through devices, platforms, and locations, the technology layer supports his physical internet is powerful enough with a low power embedded IoT to follow the emotions, state and activities on the human experience and craft real-time responsive digital interactions.

Being Analog in a digital world

A gap between design and experiences parallel almost every major technology introduction that we’ve been through in the last 40 plus years of the internet. Physical Internet will ultimately be the same, progress to mass adoption and simple achievement of most people understanding it.

A skill set and active project community in IoT.

From stickers to nodes to micro-computers, digital-physical interaction is first started at an IoT appliance but requires a physical product component.

For mass adoption, these need to be low-cost, robust, accurate and have multi-year batteries. We are not quite there yet.

In other words…it is ambient & spatial.

In Da Vinci’s time, one project could take a decade; and in today’s fast-moving project-based workflow, we as creators better not take 10 years. What we can take are the combinations of efforts from the matured artistic technologists and place them around us to further inspire.

Now even clip art designers understand the usability need for the Spatial Web: design.

Rise of 4th Wave of the Internet.

In case you missed it; and with some ruthless self-promotion, The Waves Internet Model describes how the rise of the pervasive web inevitably leads to us, the human, as the interface. Just as design ruled the fast-paced, high-growth stages of the first waves of the internet, the Physical internet will require design and designers.

So, slowly we are coming around to this idea, by moving past the novelty of IoT implementations and how it can apply to almost every business/use/test / etc case there is, and collectively getting to an understanding that AI and IoT go together, and experience will be how they connect to us, the human.

The just go together

Peanut butter & jam, cornflakes and milk, good all by themselves, but better together. So is AI and IoT, verified by blockchain, and stored in lean data interfaced through a thick and well thought out layers of experience design, Better technology will get us part of the way there, maybe most of the way; but even answering questions like Why AI and IoT need REAL Blockchains or they provide an endless post entail of possibilities and variation of flavors.
