The forthcoming Artificial Intelligence Revolution(AIR): Its impact on society and firms

In this article I’m going to talk about why AI will take your job and why is a big opportunity for you.

A revolution is coming

We have to be true to ourselves and recognize that one of the biggest revolutions is coming sooner than later.

One of the advantages that this revolution is going to bring is faster technological advancements. The more AI is used to research the faster it will learn to find patterns and results for many of the questions that the world is exploring.

It’s your responsibility and mine to prepare ourselves for the first impact of this colossal tidal wave heading our way; even though highly debated I think a portion of the Darwinism theory is applicable for this case, that state:

“Only the ones that are looking for new creative ways to stay relevant, develop a skill or skills that will take machines a few decades to acquire and make the change now, not by natural selection but rather by forced evolution will be able to survive, evolve and thrive” — P.Canuma

I strongly believe that our out of the box God-given gift is the ability to adapt, evolve and learn. We are already making big brake-throughs in some areas levering current state-of-the-art AI systems and machines, that's what concerns me the most because it means that some processes are being cut from the equation, automation is taking place and people will be rendered obsolete if they don’t find out a creative way to stay useful.

If you are reading this and you get this one thing out of this article, it may easily prove to be one of the key building blocks of your future and your following generations success.

In order to fully make sure you are the one, you have to take some time to answer three questions to yourself.

  • Can you do it?
  • Will it work?
  • Is it worth it?

Before we get to talk about this revolution let’s look at how everything started and maybe we can see some patterns that repeated through the history of the universe, world and mankind since we were atoms till we gain full dominion of all animals & this giant blue planet.

How everything started

Supernova explosion

Everything began from a small singularity. The Big Bang theory is the leading explanation about the birth of the universe, it says that the universe as we know today started with a small singularity, then inflated over the next 13.8 billion years to the cosmos that we know today.

In the first second after the universe began, the surrounding temperature was as high as 5.5 billion celsius, according to NASA. The early soup would have been impossible to exist in these conditions.

After the initial expansion, the universe cooled sufficiently to allow the formation of subatomic particles and later simple atoms. Giant clouds of these primordial elements later coalesced through gravity in halos of dark matter, eventually forming the stars and galaxies visible today.

By now you must be asking why am I talking about the story of the universe, stay with me I want to take you on a trip through history so you can understand what’s in store for us in the future.

Garden of Eden

There are also religious origins which state that God created everything. Furthermore, there are mentions in the bible of catastrophic events such as the great flood where God destroys the world and all life through a great flood, saving representatives of each form of life by means of Noah’s ark later on mankind thrived till this very day.

The above paragraphs are to show you that creation (in some cases) and evolution is preceded by great destruction.

“Every act of creation is first an act of destruction.”- Pablo Picasso

How come you might ask?

The sooner you and I realise that we need to destroy our previous beliefs to receive or create a new one is the faster we will evolve.

Our history is stained with destruction, every life form and elements that exist evolved and evolves with destruction.

  • DNA evolves with mutation and changes, in other words destroying the previous sequence.
  • The brain evolves by breaking previous connections(pathways) in favour of new ones.
  • The muscles only grow if we destroy them and allow new fibres to be created.
“In Hinduism, Shiva is a deity who represents transformation. Through destruction and restoration, Shiva reminds us that endings are beginnings and that our world is constantly undergoing a cycle of birth, death and rebirth.” — Karen Salmansohn

How does this all relate with the title?

With all that was said it is safe to that before we start benefiting from AI, we going to mess up things and certainly destroying things. Here is a way that a dear friend of mine put it:

“From the conception of man to birth, its all a process of creation, destruction and evolution. ” — Chimwemwe Zulu

Lives might be lost and many other misfortunes may originate with the rise of AI.

“If we stop evolving we might as well die.” — Prince Canuma

That’s the cost of evolution we have been paying ever since the dawn of our existence. But don’t me wrong those are just concerns, AI on its own is not evil only we can make it evil so it's up to us to build it properly. Like raising a child, they are a mirror reflection of what we are, teach and what they experience.

“An apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”

Now, I’m going to first talk about the disadvantages and then the advantages of this AI Revolution. For that, I’m going to use one of the greatest revolutions in the history of mankind as an example.

The Industrial Revolution

Industrial Revolution

According to this source, the industrial revolution was the transition to new manufacturing processes in the period from about 1760 to sometime between 1820 and 1840. This transition included going from hand production methods to machines, new chemical manufacturing and iron production processes, the increase of use of steam power, the development of machine tools and the rise of the factory system.

The Industrial Revolution marks a major turning point in history; almost every aspect of daily life was influenced in some way. In particular, average income and population began to exhibit unprecedented sustained growth. Some economists say that the major impact of the Industrial Revolution was that the standard of living for the general population began to increase consistently for the first time in history, although others have said that it did not begin to meaningfully improve until the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Economic historians are in agreement that the onset of the Industrial Revolution is the most important event in the history of humanity since the domestication of animals and plants.

Now, let us weigh the pros and cons.

Cons

– Loss of farming

– The beginning of the pollution

– Poor working conditions in factories

Pros

– More Efficient Production

– Cheaper Prices

– A major increase in the Job opportunities

– Spectacular motivation, changing the world

– Improved the quality of life

We can clearly see that there are trade-offs (sacrifices) that we have to make in order to evolve as a species and keep thriving, we gained a lot more than we lost. But that’s relative, as my dear friend and brother say:

“For every advantage, there is a disadvantage and vice-versa” — Jersey J.Simbine

The impact of the industrial and digital revolution has, undoubtedly, been substantial on practically all aspects of our society, life, firms and employment.

The forthcoming Artificial Intelligence Revolution(AIR): Its impact on society and firms

So now I’m free I got no strings on me!

I will begin by saying that the gains we make in AI can ultimately destroy us, but we have got to admit that death by science fiction is somewhat funny.

Artificial Intelligence(AI) and automation will make a large number of people(professionals) increasingly redundant.

You and I might lose our jobs, but does that mean we will certainly lose it?

No, we might see those jobs radically re-imaged and that’s the part that should bring happiness and joy because this will maximize our effectiveness and efficiency, this is a clear example of Noah’s ark for mankind, a second chance to have more time to be human, to work with AI machines rather than competing with them.

As professionals, we should realise that there are tasks that current narrow AI outperforms us and note we haven’t yet achieved general intelligence AI.

All hope is not lost rather a new one is being created!

If we try to hold back or ignore the coming colossal tidal wave of AI and automation, the data deluge will soon swamp us, AI will take lift and others will evolve to harness its power while we are stuck and they will sweep us away by rendering us obsolete or unuseful.

“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” — George Bernard Shaw

To overcome industrial inertia and ride this wave we should be preparing ourselves to the inevitable and evolve as quickly as possible.

We stand before two doors

1. We stop making progress and building intelligent machines, computer software and hardware. But given how valuable computer, technology and automation is, we will continue developing them.

What do we have to lose?

There is a lot to consider when betting on something that can annihilate and completely wipe from the face of the earth. Something that has its own thoughts and ideas, image if it thinks we are the villain of the story(which we are), we are no angels but the truth is only God or supreme force (for those who don’t believe in God) can judge us no other being or thing has the right and should do that.

What can stop us from doing it?

Something would have to happen to us in order to completely stop us from permanently developing the technology. To tell you the truth don’t count on that happening because as human beings it’s in our nature to explore no matter how dangerous and difficult. We are dreamers!

“What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” — Napoleon Hill

The only alternative we have is door number two.

2. We continue developing intelligent machines and as time goes by we will find ourselves building machines that are more intelligent than we are, once that happens they will begin improving themselves and then we will reach what mathematician IJ Good called intelligence explosion, the process can get away from us.

Intelligence Explosion

Let an ultraintelligent machine be defined as a machine that can far surpass all the intellectual activities of any man however clever. Since the design of machines is one of these intellectual activities, an ultraintelligent machine could design even better machines; there would then unquestionably be an ‘intelligence explosion’, and the intelligence of man would be left far behind. Thus the first ultraintelligent machine is the last invention that man need ever make.

This intelligence explosion is what Hollywood depicts as Ultron or Terminator, and that’s not likely what will happen; we will build such intelligent machine that is so much competent than us the slightest divergence between their goals and ours could destroy us.

Machines are already smarter than humans are at many specific tasks: detect images, playing chess, searching large databanks, detecting underwater mines, and more. Meaning we already have narrow intelligence AI machines that achieve superhuman level intelligence in those tasks. But one thing that makes humans special is their general intelligence. Humans can intelligently adapt to radically new problems in the urban jungle or outer space for which evolution could not have prepared them. Humans can solve problems for which their brain hardware and software was never trained.

There are those of us that doubt that ultra-intelligent AI is possible, much less inevitable then we must find something wrong with one of the following assumptions and there are only three.

  1. Intelligence is the product of information processing

According to Forbes article entitled: Big Data: 20 Mind-Boggling Facts Everyone Must Read by Bernard Marr

  • The data volumes are exploding, more data has been created in the past two years than in the entire previous history of the human race.
  • Data is growing faster than ever before and by the year 2020, about 1.7 megabytes of new information will be created every second for every human being on the planet.
  • By then, our accumulated digital universe of data will grow from 4.4 zettabytes today to around 44 zettabytes, or 44 trillion gigabytes.
  • Every second we create new data. For example, we perform 40,000 search queries every second (on Google alone), which makes it 3.5 searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year.

Meaning, information is there so this will certainly happen while regarding the rate of progress, I don’t think it matters because we will progress. Unless we are stopped.

“If you’re walking down the right path and you’re willing to keep walking, eventually you’ll make progress.” — Barack Obama

2. We will continue to improve our intelligent machines

We want to understand our problems and solve mankind’s greatest problems. This is one place where AI is right for the job.

Artificial intelligence helps us in reducing the error and the chance of reaching accuracy with a greater degree of precision is a possibility. It is applied in various studies such as space exploration.

Intelligent robots are fed with information and are sent to explore space. Since they are machines with metal bodies, they are more resistant and have greater ability to endure the space and hostile atmosphere.

They are created and acclimatized in such a way that they cannot be modified or get disfigured or breakdown in a hostile environment.

3. We are not near the summit of possible intelligence

AI is still an infant

This is what makes our intuition of risks so unreliable.

“Some researches say that worrying about AI safety is like worrying about overpopulation in Mars”

Super AI can explore the spectrum of intelligence and surpass us in ways we can’t imagine and this is possible and true by the virtue of speed alone,

Electronic circuits function a million times faster than biochemical ones, so this machine can take a million times faster than the minds who built it, if we run it for a week it will perform 20,000 years of human level intellectual work, how can we understand much less constrain a mind making this much progress.

This is one of if not biggest revolution our species has ever face.

My question to you is, are you ready for it?
