A Needed Fresh Approach

This past week I gave the first in series of #aiforgood talks in Asia — In this talk series we cover the practical ways to guide AI towards ethical development, and de-bunk the tale of the internet as one continuous path of growth, governed by smart sounding formulas and rules. It’s not. It comes in waves.

So Where do you start?

Well I took a long look at technology history and how internet innovation was and is a cyclical process — rises and peaks that seem to build on one other — the massive disruptive crashes and recoveries — a great way to visualize the repetitive pattern of rolling technology trends is into the shape of a wave model.

Like every Revolution, advancements have never happened all at once. They are in fact, always, a series of growth spurts. Just like human adolescent; big technology growth spirts aren’t healthy. So with that in mind lets look at the internet growth spurts; and find some words and examples to start talking about them like adults looking back at an adventurous youth.

A model to describe the persistent availability of internet; and how it relates to current and future priorities.

What it all means | Why a Wave

When we look back, it has never been one technology that builds sustained economic or innovation growth — it has always been combinations. Lets take a look at how the patterns of internet growth typically build slowly, then speed up when combined to form a massive disruptive wave; where nothing is the same after the wave hits.

The Waves:

The first wave: Internet of your desk.

THE FIRST WAVE : Desk Internet.

Separate Workstations that send & receive shared information.

An Internet of islands — The Internet around 1996 was that of the separate websites of first wave internet, the Desk Internet typical was shared by many users doing many tasks through a single portal, on a shared line to an internet of islands. Un-personal and unknowing the separate sites we visited did not know us, or our preferences. Instead we’ve come to want the social media style experience to merge and serve us like today’s internet: systems that know us via our shared information, connections & relationships, and more personally from our preferences.

The second wave: Internet of your pocket.

THE SECOND WAVE : Mobile Internet.

Extending desktop internet to single mobile pocket-sized devices.

Available & Accessible — To extend these experience to single mobile device — convenient enough to fit in our pockets, but powerful enough to make portable the experiences of the desktop computing environment — portable internet is the second wave. by extending our existing profiles and social experiences, we can add new ones where previously unknown needs are met thus better integrating the physical and digital worlds we live in — and making these new experiences relevant. A personal screen and environment we carry — to then interact with a world of internet connections.

The third wave: Internet of the world.

THE THIRD WAVE : Physical Internet.

Bringing social network experiences into the physical world.

Physical & Smart — The third wave takes these now familiar experiences, and bringing them into the physical world around us — As part of the current wave of computing; the third wave, collectively we get to build on and look forward to some of the biggest trends and topics of today’s technology landscape; By adding intelligence to the internet and the hardware around us — called the internet of things — we are beginning to create a whole new experience medium: the physical internet. Combining Blockchain, Big Data, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and crafting them into a seamless experiences: combinations of technology formed into useable tools.

The fourth wave: Internet of you.

THE FOURTH WAVE : Internet of You.

Seamless personal internet experiences.

Personal & Intelligent — in our everyday life the fourth wave will finally achieve the missing piece: making this data intelligent, responsive, reactive and relevant to me, the person. If the IoT is the body of the sensor experience, Big Data would be the memory, Blockchain is relationships & action history, AI would be the brain interpreting and deciding on these inputs ->> AMI would be the personality expressing preference, desire and digital emotion, Vr/MR adding vision and sight, robotics creating physical interaction and nanotech making large technologies small enough to disappear into any moment. In a near future we will bring all these together into a personal view on technology — one that will increase the relevance, and value to us; the end user.

Why Now?

What gets me and the rest of us focused on 4th wave internet technologies excited is the start of investment, mergers and acquisitions in Ambient Intelligence (AmI), Virtual/Mixed Reality, Robotics and NanoTech — all starting a movement that will culminate in meaningful combinations, with 2018 being a cornerstone year in the internet.

How to explain and prioritizing the next big things

Here’s how I came to realize the internet comes in waves: trying to explain it to rocket scientists. In 2013 I gave a keynote speech at the European Space Agency in Holland, and I was tasked with an address to explain the rise Of IOT, and how it would impact internet innovation:

An Internet for Space

4 Near Critical events happen on-average each year on board the International Space Station (ISS). Critical Event Intelligent Routing could be a solution to streamline tasks and keep astronauts on track in an emergency. Adding network intelligence to a spatially relative environment is the key — This was our exploration topic at ESABIC, and what brought me speaking about the idea of adding a geo-spatial network layer to the ISS, and building a positioning system without the need of PSTN cell towers, satellites or other methods — an internet for space — where 4th wave internet technologies can exist & flourish, to bring critical assistive intelligence to space.

The New Internet Needs to Become Personal

The Internet of islands — Much like the Internet around 1996, is a great description of today’s Internet of Things. Instead of the separate websites of the first wave of internet, we want the social media style experience to merge and serve us like today’s internet: systems that know us via our shared information, connections & relationships, and more know us more personally from our preferences.

We are living in an era of mini-revolutions. Not in an era of akin to ‘industrial revolution’ which was one major occurrence, but in fact, are experiencing rapid bursts of innovation that each represent a distinct and separate wave of innovation. A new waves model is here, which is a way to explain the rising tide of current technology trends and how put the buzz words into perspective. A way to understand why VR is not at the stage of mass-adoption yet, and that combinations of IOT, Blockchain, AI and Big Data are where it’s currently at — both commercially and from the consumer’s perspective.

As we are currently in the 3rd Internet wave — i want to highlight the goal of our collective effort to build effective technical innovation: to see more on this, read my article 2016 is artificial 2018 will be Ambient,

As i suggest there, we should collectively be aiming to integrated a more modular approach to Ai architecture, one where researchers and algorithm builder are able to tackle hard to understand problem of Human to Machine interface, and where human needs are met by all future AI services; from shoe retailers and service providers to an endless array of commercial possibilities.
