Over the centuries people who better understood the true direction of technological advancements made great fortunes and success stories. Whether it be the invention of the mechanical engine, the laying out of the railway tracks, the discovery of oil or the revolutionary growth of computers; the understanding of the true potential has always paid off. The best way to realize a technological disturbance is to get a sound knowledge of the driving forces behind it.
The recent wave of the technological advancements that have happened in the last three to four decades is highly attributed to the advancements in the computational power of the computers and viral spread of internet across the globe. The computers have advanced so quickly that a pocket smartphone today has more computational power than the combined computational capacity of Apollo 11 spaceship that put the first human beings on the moon, and that too at a cost of a couple of hundred dollars.
Artificial Intelligence Trends To Watch This Year | Data Driven Investor
Expect a broad range of AI-enabled significant advancements in 2019. From Google searches to handling complex jobs like…
In a short span of time, the internet that started to facilitate defense and then the academic community in the 80s overpowered the everyday lives of billions of people on earth.
This whole wave of recent technological advancements is riding on three fundamental driving forces as shown above. These forces are the extremely low computational cost through computers, the ever-increasing communication speed in the form of internet and the major advances in material sciences and availability of inexpensive sensors. Together these three breakthroughs have provided unlimited access to information, almost free of cost connectivity, a better understanding of the physical world around us and heavily automated logic-based decision making.
The lower computational cost and faster communication speed are particularly the driving forces behind the recent successful wave of automated complex decision making commonly known as artificial intelligence (A.I.). The major A.I. players including Google and Facebook heavily play in the highlighted purple zone as shown in the above image. As long as the advancements in these fundamental driving forces keep on happening the advancements in A.I. will keep on achieving new heights.
