When most people hear the word AI they think about automation taking away jobs or conjure up images of the Terminator or a Robot apocalypse. We might think about the new highly capable robots made by Boston Dynamics that can run, lift objects, and maneuver the environment amazingly well.
Humanoid robots such as Sophia Hanson also come to mind.
It’s quite awesome to see how far robotics and AI have come to work together in such jaw-dropping technology. There are a lot of areas where this rapidly evolving technology is very applicable and could help us possibly move society forward. At the same time, we can also foresee a future where this technology may be used for nefarious purposes or they eventually take away so many jobs from people that all that is left are extremely highly skilled/technical positions. Also maybe an even more frightening outcome, is AI becoming self-aware.

Hayek's famous work 'The Theory of Complex Phenomena' (Hayek, 1964) delves into the topic of complexity and asserts…
Now let me slow down…. what was previously thought of as science fiction even just a decade or two ago is very real now. However, we are nowhere close to AI having many of the capabilities that are imagined when people get anxious about it.
When most envision these things, they are referring to AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) which means the system has the intelligence/cognitive abilities of a human being or superior to. Engineers and Scientists alike are working towards this, but it is an extremely difficult task. There are so many layers to human intelligence and consciousness that are still not fully understood, and what is understood is quite difficult to replicate.
Currently, our AI capabilities are considered Artificial Narrow Intelligence. The AI we build is only able to do tasks and respond to things in a highly specific domain. These can be found in a lot of enterprise level software, consumer applications, and B2B software services.
By liberal estimates, it is going to take at least a couple decades before we are introduced to the first versions of AGI. Not only will it be a huge technological leap but we must also make ethical/moral considerations. This Joe Rogan Podcast goes very in depth with the topic and how the future might be affected.
I think that everyone should educate themselves on AI and get a general understanding of how it works and its current uses and uses in the future. It is only going to become a more important part of our lives, so it is essential to be educated.
