You Don’t Have To Go To School To Have A Life
The Daily Grind #63
In school you are taught a lesson and then you are tested. In life, you are tested before you learn a lesson.
As we approach Labour Day another year has gone by and people are starting to get back to school. It’s already pretty hectic as is with people shopping for clothing, supplies, furniture and more.
But the biggest thing that I was asking myself as I browsed through the Moncton shopping centre yesterday was this:
What do all these people think about their own education? What about their own program that they are taking?
We’ve spent years going to school learning and developing ourselves. I personally spent nearly seven years studying to be an accountant on top of that.
But not once during that time did I reflect on the direction I was going or my own views of education. It was until after everything was said and done and that the dust settled did I feel what I truly felt about those things.
Pursuing Education
Pursuing education is a choice that we all have to make. For a lot of us it’s forced upon us. Whether the person meant well by it or not it doesn’t matter.
But at no point until we are done our formal learning, do we think about our education. What we have gone through to get to where we are now.
For me, I felt just as lost as I felt when I was figuring out what to do with my life at 15.
Of course figuring out what sort of career path you want to take at 15 is no easy task. But it’s surprising that I felt that same way at 24 as I did when I was 15.
It made me realize that pursuing education isn’t all that needed in order to live a life you want. Of course many people know that, but like so many of us, we fail to realize that.
We see pursuing education as something that is necessary and we don’t consider other options. This in fact is the sort of attitude of older generations that are filtered down to the younger ones.
What’s worse is that not every person looks at various universities. In fact in high school, our guidance counsellors talked to us about some of the prestigious universities in New Brunswick and that’s it. A lot of people went on to university without a second thought.
What Does This Have To Do With Business?
Our education is important, but the whole process represents choices and a time for self exploration.
What program we choose, what university or college we go to, or whether we choose to participate or not is significant. These decisions shape who we become and what sort of life we lead.
But even in the aftermath of it, our own decisions can do the same as well.
For business, what sort of passions you have and what company you wish to build is up to you. Some people get an education to make their business growing easier. Or perhaps it was mandatory for them.
Whatever the case may be, education (specifically getting a degree) isn’t always required to build whatever you want to build and provide. You get to shape it how you wish to shape it.
And how you wish to shape it boils down to your own desires and what you want to pursue.
So as people are going back to school or getting the chance to breathe now that the kids are gone, take time to think about what it is you want to do. Even if you are fully aware of what you wish to pursue, check again.
Because this checking is a reminder that you are living your life how you want to live it.
To your growth!
