Decentralized, Collaborative & Smart: Meet the Future of Data

More than a decade ago two guys from Wired came up with a fancy word one can every once in a while stumble on at any turn of the web: crowdsourcing. They used this term to describe a process of outsourcing a job once done by company’s employees to an undefined amount of individuals (i.e. a crowd), who would carry it out either collectively, thus through collaborative effort, or individually.

As a phenomena, crowdsourcing has many forms and derivatives: citizen journalism, free access information storages (think Wikipedia), let alone crowdfunding. By the way, did you know that the hidden purpose behind CAPTCHAs was to digitize old books piece by piece? They call it “implicit crowdsourcing”. And it seems that in this day and age we have all become its subjects.

The most obvious illustration of this would be the web mapping services gathering what is called “field data”, namely all the visual elements of the environment with which we interact. Such data can be collected both through following user’s volitional actions (as marking a point of interest on a map) and indirectly, that is through analysis of movements. They say, information is the most valuable commodity, and so it is; at the same time, as day-to-day collectors of field data, users don’t profit from it in any way, large corporations and governments being the only beneficiary party.

By this point you have probably nailed it: the purpose of Dataeum is to build a crowdsourcing model which allows those who generate Physical Data such as stores, ATMs, gas stations etc. to be rewarded for their participation. These data, being made accessible on a decentralized marketplace, shall then circulate freely, transparently and securely, from those who collect them to those who exploit them.

We aim to become the guarantor of the world’s first decentralized collaborative network for data generation and bring a real revolution in the data economy, thus democratizing its accessibility and allowing those who are at the base of its generation to be retributed.
