Not a photograph from space, but a map of Singapore’s lamp posts (dataset).

We make many micro-decisions every day. Should you wait for the bus or take a taxi? Is it safe to wear those leather loafers out today? Where can you find a parking lot?

Many of these everyday questions can be answered if we have access to the right data. The Land Transport Authority, for example, tracks bus arrival timings across the island, and that data is available to the public in real time. If you are in a hurry, knowing the arrival time of your bus could help you decide whether to hail a cab instead.

The original data.gov.sg was launched in 2011 as a repository of public data for analysis, research and application development.

Now, we want to show how data can be relevant to the layman.

Three main features:

1. Interactive dashboards

On our homepage, you will see a curated collection of charts and maps, which gives a snapshot of Singapore today. We kick off with charts highlighting Singapore’s successes, as the nation celebrates its 50th year of independence.

Each topic page will also have its own dashboard, so if you’re interested in healthcare, you will find key figures such as average hospital costs and government expenditure on healthcare.

2. Data blog

In collaboration with the various ministries and government agencies, we will be showcasing data-driven articles and visualisations on issues that matter.

3. Visualised datasets

To make data more accessible, we have also added previews for all our datasets, both as tables and charts or maps. This means that you can explore the data even without first downloading it to your computer.

We are also working on improving the quality of our datasets, and to provide new ones that are relevant to all citizens.

As we work on getting the site ready for primetime, we would love to hear from you. Send us your comments at feedback@data.gov.sg, or drop us a message on social media. Hope you enjoy exploring the beta site!
