By Lilian Coral, Chief Data Officer for the City of Los Angeles

Today, Los Angeles was featured in the Wall Street Journal’s report on The Rise of the Smart City. In an early morning meeting with a constituent interested in learning more about how the city is planning to deal with parking in the era of the Smart City, he asked me how we even began to define it. As Chief Data Officer for the City of Los Angeles, I naturally gravitated towards the following vision:

“A city can only be as smart, as it is responsive to its citizens needs and desires.”

Our open data, data science and digital services strategy works to ensure that the vision and systems are in place to:

  • Collect and process data, in real-time when possible
  • Respond to the public with transparent and accessible tools, and
  • Drive insights and decision-making.

This is what allows the city to more accurately understand what is happening in our communities, track how the city is evolving, and find innovative solutions to improve quality of life.

Here’s a brief digest that exemplifies our approach and results:

And don’t forget to Check out how Los Angeles and colleagues across the country are working to support the rise of the Smart City!
