Last week, Mayor Eric Garcetti announced the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2019–2020 and the Mayor’s data team worked diligently to make all of the data available to the public through the Open Budget Tool.

FY19–20 Proposed Budget

The Open Budget Tool is an interactive data visualization interface that allows Angelenos to browse through the City’s revenues and expenses for a given year or over a period of time, drill down top level visuals and look at data by departments, priority areas or a number of other features.

Separate visualizations embedded into the home page of the Open Budget Tool allow for tracking homelessness funds and reserve funds over time. Fiscal responsibility is a big priority for Mayor Eric Garcetti. “Through a sound budget, we achieve a strong bottom line and strengthen Los Angeles from the bottom up,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti.

A reserve fund balance of $399.9 million combined with an additional $110.9 million in Budget Stabilization Fund positions that City’s reserves at 8.12% of the General Fund, a first since the 2008 recession. Maintaining healthy city reserves ensures that the city can provide for essential services during an economic downturn.

“This proposed budget is a blueprint illustrating how we’ll achieve our highest ambitions — from ending homelessness to improving our infrastructure — while maintaining a commitment to fiscal responsibility that has helped to drive Los Angeles’ economic recovery.”

From shoring up the city’s infrastructure, to helping homeless Angelenos find their way off the streets, the Mayor’s proposed budget has monies allocated to some of the most pressing needs of our city. Our Open Budget Tool conveys this information in a simple, easy to understand manner.
