Are you wanting to make a difference and help to save lives, create a more equitable city, or use data for good? Join our team! As the City of Los Angeles continues to respond to the COVID-19 crisis, we are seeking volunteer data scientists to work on specific projects that will make LA safer and more equitable. We have a variety of projects that seek to understand the needs of our communities and address their needs.

Since the public health crisis began, we’ve been leveraging our data to build COVID dashboards to track cases and the recovery process, deliver daily data briefings for the public, and determine location-based COVID risk scores.

However, there’s still a lot of work to be done. The COVID-19 crisis has resulted in unprecedented job losses, leaving many families vulnerable and without a safety net. When it comes to rent assistance, meal programs, and more, how can we target resources to those who need them most?

If you have a background in data science, engineering, or visualizations, we’re looking for your skills on critical city projects. The length of commitment will depend on the project; however, we ask that volunteers commit about 4 hours per week. We will hold bi-weekly or monthly check-ins to discuss project updates, and ask that team members be available for virtual meetings or policy briefings on occasion.

Read more about past Data Angels project here. If this sounds like something you’re interested in, apply here to become a Data Angel! Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis.

We look forward to welcoming you to the team!
