This week, the Data Team in support of the Mayor’s Sustainability Team released our first ever greenhouse gas inventory for LA’s community-wide emissions on the City’s Open Data portal.

This data release supports the City of Los Angeles’s Sustainable City pLAn that set a vision for a cleaner environment, more robust economy, and stronger commitment to equity. The pLAn consists of short term and long term outcome goals — a few of which are for the City to lead by example on energy use, water consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs).

In this spirit of leading by example, the City also released benchmarking data on water and energy use for municipal buildings. Thanks to a generous grant from the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, the City’s first Water Data Fellow developed an accompanying interactive tool that gives context to the dataset. For the first time, city leaders and policymakers can review their departmental energy footprint and view their buildings’ water and energy usage.

Through this tool, departmental leadership can pinpoint high-energy users and make data-driven decisions to lower these buildings’ energy footprints.
