Unite 100 000 Women in Tech to Drive Change with Purpose and Impact.

That was the mission of the WomenTech Global Conference which was accomplished with more than 140k participants! 🎉 The conference took place on 10–12 June 2020 and was held online, allowing presenters and participants from all over the world to meet in one place. What was unique about this conference was the amazingly broad range. There were attendees of so many nationalities, speakers that are highly skilled as well as less experienced ones, and topics ranging from diversity and inclusion to deeply technical sessions. Moreover, consultations with companies and hiring opportunities were not missing as well, which was even more valuable given the recent increases in unemployment.

I enjoyed networking and the friendly atmosphere of the conference. Thanks to the fact that the speakers were presenting from their homes and offices, it had a really personal and homelike feel.

Among all the thrilling sessions I have attended, I would like to point out two of them that have resonated with me the most. First, I would like to mention the presentation “Upskill, Reskill and Innovate” by Maryam Daryabegi. In this session, she shared her thoughts and advice on why it’s important to always keep learning and acquiring new skills, how to be a good leader and co-worker and many more. I admired Maryam’s speaking skills, her energy, and enthusiasm about the given topic.

The other session I would like to mention is “Fix workplaces, not women” by Michelle King. Michelle is the Director of Inclusion at Netflix and the host of the weekly podcast, The Fix, which shares practical ways men and women can advance equality at work. In her session, she focused on inequality in the workplace that women, especially women of colour, often face.

She emphasized the importance of being an ally and looking out for uncomfortable situations our colleagues might find themselves in.

Here is a short overview of our colleagues’ talks, together with the links to their presentations. Video recordings will be added once released.

Jana Habásková

“Artificial Intelligence Augmented Customer Engagement 360°” by Jana Habásková

The first of our sessions was given by Jana Habásková on the topic of using artificial intelligence for augmenting customer engagement. The presentation focused on explaining why the 360° view of a customer is the key to long-standing customer relationships and positive endorsements. Furthermore, the challenges in handling digital behavioural data and combining multiple data sources to create customer journeys were described. The presentation also covered the analysis and prediction of customer needs by using machine learning and showed how to increase sale opportunities by predicting customer needs from digital behaviour data.

Aneta Albrechtová

“Help Visually Impaired People Gain More Independence Using Computer Vision” by Aneta Albrechtová

In her session, Aneta Albrechtová talked about a non-profit project we’re very passionate about and which is developed within the AI for Accessibility Hackathon organized by Microsoft. It is a web application whereby visually impaired people can gain more independence when shopping in stores. With the help of our app, they can recognize the correct price tag of any product in the store just by using their phone. The session also featured the story behind the development of this application by transforming a previous commercial project that used computer vision and deep learning techniques.

Aneta and her team won the AI for Accessibility Hackathon, which will allow them to turn the application prototype into a real product that can help hundreds of thousands of visually impaired people with their everyday struggles.

“Player Churn Prediction Using Machine Learning” by Nikola Valesova

I gave a presentation on a machine learning solution for churn prediction. The session was opened by explaining what the churn prediction is, what are its specifics in mobile games and why an effective churn prevention methodology is essential for a successful business in the free-to-play gaming industry. After that, we moved to the solution itself and the explanation of, step-by-step, how our team approached this task and what challenges we faced during its development. The presentation also covered the description of how we handled data cleaning and preparation, what categories of features were created within feature engineering, which model type achieved the best results in prediction, and what metric we used to evaluate our models.

Final words

The WomenTech Global Community will keep active with a new ambition: to inspire 1 000 000 women, minorities and allies in tech in 2021. You can still join the community to network, find out about opportunities at companies that pay attention to diversity and inclusion, and learn from other professionals.

I would like to thank the organizers for their time and all the effort they have put into making this conference happen! And a big thank you also goes to all the global ambassadors who helped to spread the word about this conference and to find sponsors so that this conference could take place. đź’ś
