Technology is something that all countries need to prosper. It has advanced much during the past years. You may or may not remember when the smartphone period started by Steve Jobs introducing the first iPhone. This was within the United States. The hugest shopping day can be remembered as well, at the time that Jack Ma’s Alibaba Group Holding’s started the Single’s Day exciting promotion that happened in China. Many advances have occurred in the technological field.

Hong Kong is a country that has not remained behind in this. Let us look at how Hong Kong is advancing its technology.

Hong Kong’s introduction in the technological field

Hong Kong’s aim to be a top technological country began when they initiated their five-year blueprint. This occurred in December 2017. It is connected with smart mobility along with 5G mobile technology.

The prestigious Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute or ASTRI placed this government project into value. The plan aims to initiate certain Hong Kong 5G applications. The reason for this is to increase the exciting autonomous vehicle feeling. The technologies to do this are present, however much trial and error is present amongst ASTRI’s intermingling with people in this field.

Some problems in the aim

The most recent project by ASTRI that wants to increase the country’s hi-tech value via applied research is occurring when there are tense and difficult political plus economic hardships in the city. There are even anti-government riots happening. Like across the globe, Hong Kong is even trying to handle the coronavirus pandemic which is proving tough by all countries.

Comparison with China

When looking at China, they have been spending much money from last year to develop infrastructure which will help the globe’s biggest 5G market. This is so whilst Hong Kong’s commercial introduction of these 5G benefits by four mobile network companies began at the beginning of the present second quarter. Therefore Hong Kong still has far to go to keep up with the big players in this field.

Some network initiatives for certain 5G applications within the country have been tinier when looking at this overall. This is by looking at the population and its square area.

Some main Chinese governments like the ones in Beijing, Shanghai plus Guangzhou claim to be taking part in exciting initiatives when comparing this with Hong Kong. These are with the help of three major telecommunications network companies. Some of China’s main internet businesses that are handled by Baidu, Alibaba, along with Tencent Holdings are even taking part in the 5-G connected aims.

What Hong Kong wants to do

Despite the above, Hong Kong has increased its mission on handling 5G advanced abilities within cellular vehicle-to-everything or C-V2X type of communications. The technology for this will let the interaction of information occur amongst vehicles, pedestrians plus roadside communications infrastructure. The main aim will be to enhance street security and allow traffic to go more smoothly.

Hong Kong’s C-V2X

Areas of the country’s dreamed intelligent transport system or C-V2X wishes to let a fresh amount of connected vehicles plus advanced amounts of autonomous driving to get placed in the country. The country is getting nearer to letting the publicity of smart mobility technology become real. This is due to the main efforts they have been doing from 2017.

Role of HKT

HKT, that is a telecom network operator in the country, increased links with ASTRI in 2018. They did this by developing the advanced Smart City Joint Laboratory wanting to experiment with advanced applications such as smart mobility networks needed for things like electronic road pricing plus connected vehicles.

HKT began 5G mobile services in April, claims to have functioned on C-V2X with ASTRI particularly at the prestigious Hong Kong Science Park. They have manufactured software for this platform.

The programme which happened upon the 5.9-gigahertz frequency band encompasses testing vehicles having built-in C-V2X procedures, a mobile app along with roadside units which send messages and give constant road safety help. This project, if successful, would be able to save many lives that are taken due to road accidents.

Role of 5G services

It has been claimed that major 5G service coverage tends to be the thing to lead the introduction of certain smart mobility programs within the country, like C-V2X systems which will aid in helping autonomous driving to occur.

This advanced mobile technology will be able to handle many connected devices when looking at these per square kilometre, give 1-millisecond latency, provide more power and employment of radio spectrum. It will be able to give excellent data download speeds. This will be much quicker to the ones that 4G networks currently give.

5G has low latency plus high bandwidth which will be able to let communications amongst cars and the infrastructure to be enhanced. At the time that there are connections amongst the vehicle and connected things, the vehicle control system plus the data centre tend to be quicker, and the security of autonomous driving can become better.

ASTRI wants to increase the C-V2X aims in the country with a fresh trial that will occur this year. The programme will let normal cars employ 4G for backhaul needs. They can later go to 5G at the time that the service becomes present at a particular place. Another test location at the famous Hong Kong Science Park may be developed.

With the help of these, ASTRI wants to increase C-V2X introduction in other places across the country. They even want to create a report concerning 5G services for helping automated driving safety.

Time along with constant work is needed from various organizations before autonomous driving can be developed. The country hopes that 5G linked smart mobility aims will help develop better applications to aid this out. Time will tell whether Hong Kong and its main technological giants will be able to develop these initiatives that will make driving and road safety be enhanced much for all in the city.
