When you close your eyes and imagine your ideal relationship, what do you see?

  • Waking up in bed together for some morning cuddles…?
  • Telling each other your deepest, darkest secrets…?
  • Sharing your life together…tending to the garden, working out together, or visiting friends and family…?

If you were born in the West, after 1960, this kind of vision may be familiar to you.

These days, many people are looking for an ‘all-in-one’ partner: A best friend, sexy lover, team-mate, co-parent, travel partner, in-house-therapist and more.

Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it!?

However this kind of relationship is very different to the traditional model of a committed relationship as practised throughout most of human history.

Back in the day, most people didn’t really choose who they married… marriages were often strategically arranged by parents and matchmakers (which is still the norm outside of the West).

In which case, you’d marry because your family found a “good person” for you.

Or in less empowered cases, because it made economic sense, secured allies, or paid off some sort of debt.

Factors such as status, background, family ties, and one’s ability to provide took precedence over things we now consider essential, such as personality, friendship, emotional intimacy and sexual attraction.

If love grew, that was wonderful, but it was not a concerning factor and you certainly didn’t marry because you were in love!

Fast forward to today and there’s been some seismic shifts when it comes to dating, love and relationships…

Society has become more individualistic… (from which there are pros and cons)

Contraception has liberated sex… (which comes with more pros and cons)

And now, many people are looking for an ‘all-in-one’ relationship that is both filled with romance and rooted in everyday intimacy.

And while relationship satisfaction has gone up for those happily coupled, many single people are struggling to find a partner who mutually satisfies all their desires.

Which begs the question — Can we really have it all with one person?

Speaking from experience, we believe so, (though nurturing a wider community outside your primary relationship is certainly important too!)

However you’ve still got to be realistic and willing to check in with yourself…

What are your expectations of a modern relationship?

And are you willing to match them?
