Being the first Data Scientist
The role of a data scientist is one of the most important today for many companies in this era of Big Data, Nowadays it is a very requested work and many of us who work in the area have the opportunity to be the first data scientist of the company and promote the fantastic things that we can develop for business growth.
What is a data scientist?
According to Investopedia, Data Scientist is defined as:
A data scientist collects, analyzes and interprets large volumes of data to help a company improve its operations. These professionals develop statistical models in order to analyze data and use different analytics to find patterns, trends, and relationships in data sets. This information can be used to predict consumer behavior while identifying business and operational risks. The data scientist is often a storyteller, presenting data insights in a simple manner to people at the organization.
Also, We can name other roles in the area of data science such as:
1) Machine learning Engineer.
2) Data Engineer.
3) Data Analyst.
But when the company is just beginning to dabble and invest in the area of data science do not know how to differentiate the characteristics for each role in the area and as a result think that a data scientist should handle all those areas what we know as “Unicorn”.
The First Data Scientist
The definition of “First Data Scientist” is very simple: is when you are the first data the scientist hired by the company who wants to know how you can help understand the a large amount of data they have and how to take advantage of them for the benefit of the company.
But there are some problems that you can get, for example, the leaders are not clear what a data scientist does for that reason In the first week of work it is very important to explain and make clear about the functions of a data scientist and explain how is the the process of a data Science project.
Important Skills for the Success
We know that the skills in programming, analysis, and knowledge of the different algorithms are very important for a data scientist. There are two other skills that help create successful solutions and help you to develop better in the work as they are:
1) The Communication.
2) Product understanding.
Oral and written Communication is one of the most important skills to succeed in our work, as a data scientist in our day to day we have to have different conversations with different work colleagues in different areas such as the business department or other areas more dedicated to the development of software the important thing is to know how to express our ideas in a clear and consistent as well as know how to listen and understand the requirements that ask us according to the business need.
In another hand the Product understanding is a very important skill understand the product and the business are very important for a successful project. Know how the product works and how users use it is very important because it allows our solutions to adapt in a good way to the product and that it is useful for customers to carry out this understanding we can analyze the behavior of product use by part of the clients, define and analyze the metrics of Google analytics in order to predict the the behavior of users.
