Introducing The Backbone: a podcast exploring the journey inside finance at a startup

In my role as Director at SurePath Capital Partners, I have the opportunity to work with founders, CEOs and finance leaders across various early and growth stage technology companies. As we work with companies through their most critical stages as an organization — whether that be raising a funding round or realizing years of hard work and value through exploring deliberate M&A opportunities, I’ve been inspired by the finance leaders of these organizations.

There is a lot written, talked about and shared when it comes to the various functions within a startup. Whether that be sales, marketing, growth hacking, development, or coding.

But there is one thing that doesn’t get as much attention as it should — finance functions within these technology startups.

Yes, there are plenty of blogs and other forms of content you can read and learn about startup finances, but they’re typically from the perspective of an investor. It’s hard to get these perspectives directly from the people who are in there operating day in, day out.

Over the last year, I’ve been co-hosting Bytes with Danial Shaikh — a podcastdiscussing all the tech worth talking about. Through this, I’ve realized the power of podcasting as a medium of communication. It’s raw, direct and easy to digest.

I wanted to create a platform that allowed finance leaders across various stages of technology companies to share their stories, the challenges they face, and how they go about serving as the backbone of their companies — as finance leaders.

Over the past few months, I’ve met with numerous finance leaders from technology companies at varying stages, and I’m proud to finally introduce

The Backbone: a journey inside finance at a startup!

The Backbone will start as a podcast. Each episode will feature a finance leader (Director/VP, Finance or CFO) that:

  • shares their story of how they entered the world of startups,
  • explains what their company does
  • describes unique challenges he/she faces in their role
  • shares expertise relating to specific topics on the mind of finance leaders, such as: preparing for board meetings, determining the key metrics to monitor, when to think about raising capital, amongst others

The Backbone may not be for everyone, but if you’re either working in finance/operations at a tech startup or looking to become a finance leader at a high-growth tech startup — you won’t find a better place to learn from your peers/folks that are already in roles you aspire to be in.

Take a listen to the Pilot:

The first episode will be released here: www.thebackbone.simplecast.fm
