Circleville’s Dave Horning is a Member of the Ohio Business Brokers Association (OBBA)
“I just want one place online where people can contact me,” said the well-practiced Business Broker from Circleville, Ohio, Dave Horning. “I’m so busy all the time, and I don’t want to have to check this place and that place, all over the internet when someone’s trying to reach me. I just want them to be able to simply send me a message, so I can respond. You can do that, right?”
“Don’t worry man, I got you,” I responded. “That’s my main goal — to make it simple for everybody to contact you. I’d never do that to you, man. Tell you what…I’ll send everybody to your Ohio Business Brokers Association (OBBA) Message Page. You honestly have enough online right now about you. And, another link with your name on it in search results is just going to confuse people.”
“But, what about building a website?”
“Dave, your Medium Publication, Dave Horning, Ohio Business Appraiser, is your website. You have a Home page, an About page, and a Contact page. You don’t need Service Pages, because your nonfiction stories and articles explain what you do plainly. Whenever Google sends you the Business Profile verification letter in the mail, the link https://medium.com/dave-horning-ohio-business-appraiser is what will be recognized as your website by Google, Bing, and all other search engines. I mean, if you want to build one and be fancy, you can. But it’s a waste of money, and truly unnecessary in my honest, professional opinion as your Business Editor.”
Dave Horning’s Ohio Business Brokers Association Page
It’s always a great idea for professionals to get in the association that relates to their trade. And, this one (that itself was started in 1987), Dave has a Member Page on. “The middle market is what I specialize in,” he said.
“We should have done this a few stories ago, but, would you mind breaking down what the owners in the middle market are to your readers?” I asked. “And, could you also tell them a little more about yourself in detail, as far as being a Certified Business Broker from the Midwestern Region of the United States? Also, tell the people where you went to college, and where you got your Certified Valuation Analysts (CVA) Certification.”
“Sure,” the kind, older gentleman began. “Business owners in what’s called the ‘middle market’ make anywhere from $2 million to $25 million in sales annually. And, I got certified through the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts (NACVA). I remember back then we had four eight-hour days to learn all of this stuff! That was a long time ago, and different programs teach in different ways, with different schedules, I mean. I attended Cornell University as an undergraduate, majoring in Chemistry and Economics, and my MBA program with Accounting and Finance Concentrations was at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.”
NACVA is located in Midvale, Utah, and is known as “The Authority In Matters of Value”.
If you go through their program, you can become a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) like Dave, or a Master Analyst in Finance Forensics (MAFF). You also have the option of going for a CBA (Certified Business Appraiser) Certification, a MCBA (Master Certified Business Appraiser, and/or you could of course get recertified if you needed to through this association.
The Circleville Native Business Broker Is Also On Facebook and LinkedIn
Dave’s old school, and really isn’t a huge fan of social media like that, although for the sake of business he tries his best to embrace it. Still, I felt kind of bad the other day when I asked the older gentleman to use Messenger for voice clips, (hoping that it would enhance our communication with us both being busy men), and the social media tool ended up getting on his nerves.
“I went to Messenger, and the first thing it wants is a password,” the local Ohio Business Broker explained over the voice clip, one that contained a vocal tone from him that I could tell reflected aggravation. “Then, it sends me another message for a code, so I do that, and that’s fine. Then, they want me to change my password. So, four or five minutes later after initially trying to contact you, I’m finally able to send you this message.”
“Dave, I’m sorry, man,” I responded. “The last thing I wanted to do is give you a headache! Maybe you hadn’t been in there in a long time, and Facebook was just doing a security check on you, just like Gmail will do, or LinkedIn.”
I understand why it’s aggravating for him, because all he wanted to do was sit down and send a message, and those precious minutes during the workday he didn’t want to waste just to say a few words to me. “Believe me, I understand,” I said. “For some reason Amazon does that to me every time I try to go in there to my account.”
“I’ll still send you the messages on Messenger. But man, they gotta try and make this stuff more user-friendly!”
“I feel you. And, don’t think it’s only because all of this stuff is new to you, and is not of your generation. Believe me, people who use social media all the time, myself included, have some of the same complaints. I’ll make it simple from now on. Whenever I’m sending you a group to join or something, I’ll just manually copy and paste it inside of Messenger, so you can click on it and go to it. Also, don’t forget to respond to my request to connect with you at your LinkedIn page…”
