At the legendary 1939 World’s Fair, General Motors sponsored an exhibit called “Futurama”. The exhibit were intended to offer a realistic vision of motorways in the distant future — the 1960s. The visitors were fascinated with roads filled with traffic capable of keeping “a safe distance between cars maintained by automatic radio control.” Nearly sixty years later, little has changed: we still drive our vehicles without communications between cars or between cars and intelligent roadways. The vision that has so far eluded the automobile giant shows how predicting the future of automobiles is tricky business.
