Last week, Elon Musk, the celebrity chief executive of (among other companies) Tesla, was quoted saying “self-driving will encompass all modes of driving by the end of the next year.” Musk’s supporters paid rapt attention to his presentation at SXSW in Austin, but perhaps they should have been paying attention to a modest event that took place in San Ramon, California. On March 6, the very first vehicle without a human driver — an autonomous shuttle bus — operated on California’s roads.
