5 things that WILL increase your cholesterol levels!
Last time we talked about things that will not increase your cholesterol levels, so naturally it makes sense if I give you a list of things that will actually make you more prone to hypercholesterolemia, isn’t it?
So without any further due, here is the list of 5 things that are responsible for increasing your cholesterol levels-
Number 1. Genetics
Yes, like it or not, much like many other disorders hypercholesterolemia also has its roots deeply embedded in one’s genetic make-up.
The Genetically originated form of the disorder is better known as “Familial Hypercholesterolemia”. or FH.
Naturally our body produces all the cholesterol that we need for our normal bodily functions (synthesis of Vit D and steroid hormones, new cell membrane generation, lipid molucule transport etc), and once the cholesterol has done its role our body recycles it in the form of bile and produces new cholesterol molucules. What happens in FH is that the affected person’s body is unable to recyle cholesterol while still producing new cholesterol. Hence level of cholesterol in the blood keeps increasing. FH runs in family and one of the two parents having it increases the risk of inheriting it by almost 50%.
Number 2. Liver
Yes, remember us discussing how all mammals, birds and some fish make cholesterol. Well to be exact, of all the cholesterol synthesis, ~20% happens in the liver. Not just that, all the cholesterol is taken back to liver for recycling.
So, as you can imagine, liver is to cholesterol is what a bus depot is to buses!
Liver is full of cholesterol so keep the consumption limited..
Number 3. Saturated Fats & Trans Fats
We have all heard it, Saturated Fats and Trans Fats are not good for our heart…that they contributes in clot formation and hardening of arterier, hence causing heart ailment!
Saturated Fats Sources : Fatty meats, chicken skin, lard, butter, cheese, dairy products
Sources of Trans Fats: partially hydrogenated oils in processed foods like cakes, pie crusts, biscuits, frozen pizza, cookies, crackers etc.
Consumption of both Saturated and Trans fats is associated with increase in levels of bad cholesterol (LDL, VLDL) and decrease in levels of good cholesterol (HDL)
So limiting the intake of of Trans and Saturated Fats is the best strategy👍👍👍
Number 4. Shellfish
It is a common knowledge is that Fish is lean meat and is good for heart (which is true for the most part). But there are some sea creatures that are really high in cholesterol.
Calamari/Squid (100fm): 233 mg cholesterol
Shrimp (100gm): 161 mg cholesterol
Lobster (100gm): 146 mg cholesterol
Check out cholesterol contant of all seafood here for your own knowledge.
Number 5. Grapefruit
Well now now, you would say what! and I would say, “I know😕”. Grapefruit (if you don’t know) is a citrus fruit and is a very good source of Vit C. But if you are someone who has high levels of blood cholesterol and taking statins to manage it, there’s something that you should know-
Grapefruit and grapefruit juice ineterefes with the absoprtion and action of statins! So if you are taking statins, eating a grapefruits alongside the medication will decrease its efficacy and put you at risk
So here were my five that will put youy at risk for having high blood cholesterols.
