Dreamers & Doers: a new way to hire creatives

When we launched the Day Dreamer app in August of 2018, we knew creative individuals needed a better way to connect with each other… but especially locally. Before launching the app to both Apple App + Google Play stores, we had 600 creative people invited to our 4-month beta, secured an extremely tight feedback loop to each creative person, and knew we were on the precipice to helping the creative communities in Austin, TX (and everywhere) be more successful.
We launched. We listened. We saw. But especially, we evolved.
During this time, we were part of 40+ events in the Austin-metro area in 2018 alone, which brought us closer and closer to each creative medium we served: music, photography, videography, fashion & beauty, visual arts, design, theater & dance, and many more.
In being able to talk to each person in the creative communities that exist around us, we learned how risky it can be to hire (and be hired) for creative projects. We’re a team of creative people ourselves — we’ve hired and have been hired ourselves. We’ve had to negotiate, re-negotiate, follow-up, and follow-up again and again (and again)— all to ensure we are paid and earning what’s fair for the art we create.
This is why we started our Dreamers & Doers pilot program.
Businesses began to reach out to us to see if we can help them source their creative talent. Day Dreamer app users were connecting on the app but also hiring photographers, videographers, or individuals in other creative mediums. But with a lack of education on what to pay, how to negotiate the terms of the hiring, and communicating to not only be understood but to also not be misunderstood in the process.
