Boston Marathon Bombing
One of the worst terrorist attacks on U.S. soil since 9/11
The running of the Boston Marathon is an annual event — over 100 years old — traditionally taking place on “Patriot’s Day.” This Massachusetts holiday commemorates the battles of Concord and Lexington, Massachusetts fought on April 19, 1775 and marking the start of America’s Revolutionary War.
On April 15, 2013, the normally upbeat event, which draws runners from around the world and scores of spectators, was marred by violence. On that day, two bombs were detonated near the marathon’s finish line, killing three people and injuring more than 500 others.
Three days later, photos and videos of two suspects were released. The two men subsequently drove to the Cambridge campus of MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), shot and killed an MIT police officer and then carjacked a vehicle, kidnapping the driver. The driver escaped before the alleged bombers drove to Watertown, Massachusetts, where they detonated explosives and engaged with law enforcement officers.
