Remembering My Father on Father’s Day
And what he taught me about democracy
Yesterday, I attended a No Kings Rally. My sign said this.
Because of our crumbling democracy and since it is Father’s Day, I’ve been thinking a lot about my Dad’s service in the military. My Dad was a man who valued hard work and honesty. He taught me to be self-sufficient, work hard and never lie. He taught all of his nine children to respect the flag, America and never forget to thank veterans when we see them.
Dad never wanted to talk about his time in the Pacific during WWII, but he did tell us snippets of experiences. Now I am older and I have read more about this time in history, I realize my Dad went through hell while stationed in Okinawa Island during the war.
He was a senior in high school when Pearl Harbor was attacked by air by the Japanese on December 7, 1941. Eight U.S. battleships, three cruisers, three destroyers, anti-aircraft training ship and a minelayer were destroyed. American deaths were 2,393 and 1,178 were wounded.
