Happy Year 10, Day One to Twitter! In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of The Bird , I took a look at the D1A Team’s very own Twitter Day Ones. As D1A’s self-proclaimed Lead Twitter Expert & Resident Millennial, I took it upon myself to start hunting down our team’s first Tweets to show how much we #LoveTwitter —and the results are pretty hilarious. From platform confusion to beautifully crafted 140-character narratives, check out some of the amazing Twitter Day Ones from the team below (organized chronologically from earliest to latest adopter).
Senior Account Director, Laura Barganier: I honestly can’t remember the context for this. I joined Twitter in the Fall of 2007, but apparently I waited until Valentine’s Day 2008 (a few days before I was about to start my first full-time PR gig) to share to the world that I was reading (a book?) at 8:30 AM. Co-Founder & Managing Partner, Rob Longert: Diving right in and figuring things out at my first agency, Peppercomm! Co-Founder & CEO, Josh Rosenberg: I was at work. Just as I am right now :) Co-Founder & President, Brad Laney: This was my shout out to Maria Rinklin, a colleague at former agency M Booth, for immersing me in Twitter! VP of Creative & Experience, Jamie Falkowski: As far as first tweets go, pretty standard. Looking at the date, this was while I was working at Time Out NY and given the time stamp (2AM) I most likely signed up while at a show or covering something late night. ’08 was an interesting time for digital music — and my Twitter feed was full of unknown artists exploring alternatives for Myspace to be discovered on. Creative Director, Nate Poekert: FACT: I once had the @ Nate handle and then deleted my Twitter account because I was annoyed with the number of emails (at that time there was no way to control the notifications you got). I hang my head in shame every day because of that. Digital Strategist, Alex Dubov: The time was seven years ago this, this week. The place was my freshman year Spring Break in Palm Springs with my best friends. They were all already on Twitter and they demanded that I create an account. I thought it was stupid and would never last (here we are in Twitter’s 10th year), but I did it anyway. The context of my first tweet was that we were watching my beloved Portland Trail Blazers defeat the Phoenix Suns (129–109) on TV. Fan favorite Brandon Roy was rocking some patchy facial hair that looked like a lawn in need of some Miracle Grow. I closed with a self-deprecating reference to my own inability to grow a beard. It was all downhill from there. Digital Strategist, Alex Israel (me!): Typical of a 16-year-old on the bus to a track meet, all I could think to Tweet about was was summer break. Slightly embarrassed about not being able to understand Twitter and not capitalizing my “I”s, but honestly this is one of the more mild of my early Tweets. It should be noted that I was first of anyone in my high school to jump on the Twitter bandwagon. Creative Strategist, Jono Moore: 11:55 PM on Monday? It was my freshman year so I was probably taking a break from studying in my dorm (read: crushing my roommate at FIFA 09) to stretch my social media legs. Probably posted from a Blackberry. I would also like to call out the use of the ellipsis. SMH Vice President, Alyson Buck: Only thing I can say is that maybe I found some glory in being a Twitter holdout? Also, grammar check. Lead Strategist, Alex Morris: In 2009 I was working at WONG DOODY and working on a big new business pitch — which we won at the end of that summer. That week we had a company meeting about web 2.0 (lol) and we were integrating a social component into our pitch. We needed to showcase best and worst in class of companies on social, so I tweeted at a few to see who responded. We also cold tweeted at people with questions about the brand we were pitching to build a persona. Senior Account Executive, Lauren Sachs: I moved to New York in March 2009 to intern at a music PR company, and by September I had been hired on as a tour press manager. This was my attempt at upping my social media game as we were in the midst of creating a digital marketing arm of the agency and I wanted to educate myself. @aperry6 is one of my best friends who joined Twitter at the same time as me so we could investigate together (and have someone to Tweet with). Senior Account Executive, Jacob Taylor: Apparently I started my tweets with my name, using the third person… Also at this time, I was a sophomore in college and was planning to study abroad the following summer. In the end, I did end up spending the summer of 2010 in Berlin and it was one of the greatest decisions I ever made! Director of Digital Strategy, Blake Cadwell: What’s terrifying is that I have no idea what that was about. Production Coordinator, Jay Sheets: My first tweet was making fun of my friend who I thought used Twitter too much. 4,146 tweets later and I think I don’t tweet enough. Creative Apprentice, Eun Hee: I think I wrote this when I was super homesick and wanted home comfort food, which to me are stuffed churros and Mexican hot chocolate. Funny because I’ve been really homesick these days too and I’m craving those exact things. Account Executive, Brittany Walsh: At Hofstra, I won a lottery to attend the Presidential Debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney. Clearly I was super excited about it. Last but not least… Our first tweet as an agency may be the most recent, but well worth the wait—masterfully art directed, D1A’s Twitter Day One provides a visual, a link, AND compelling copy, in true best practice form.
