Preserving all of life’s stories, values and memories are extremely important due to unexpected events that bring to light the reality of life’s fragility.

What is Legacy? According to Collins Dictionary, it is ‘something handed down or received from an ancestor or predecessor’. It is about the richness of the individual’s life, including what that person accomplished and the impact he or she had on people and places. Ultimately, the story of a person’s life reflects the individual’s legacy.

Have you ever thought about the lives of your grandparents and great-grandparents? Wouldn’t it be exciting to discover how your ancestors fought through their lives or how they managed during their difficult times etc.! It may not be very surprising if we do not know even the name of our great-grandparents. According to a survey conducted by Ancestry.com, one in three adults couldn’t name any of their great-grandparents. However, this is important as it helps us to know more about where we came from, thus learn more about ourselves. It’s important to leave a legacy in a lasting and authentic way.

What legacy did your ancestors pass down to you? What legacy do you want to pass down to your children and grandchildren? Passing on stories and traditions to your children and grandchildren not only helps to preserve your legacy, it helps teach some valuable life lessons as well. It is a precious gift you can pass on to generations after generations. Don’t worry if you think you’ve lived a less than exciting life. What may not seem like a big deal to you might have a lot of meaning to others. We all have interesting stories to tell, so tell them.

“I think the whole world is dying to hear someone say, ‘I love you.’ I think that if I can leave the legacy of love and passion in the world, then I think I’ve done my job in a world that’s getting colder and colder by the day.” — Lionel Richie

Regular journaling is an important way to leave your mark behind. A life driven by self-reflection and purpose will result in a legacy to be proud of. Future generations will love being able to see your journaling style and what you left behind. You are important. You will be immensely important to those who will be part of your family in the future. They too will want to know about your life and your experiences. The journals you create are directly tied to the legacy you will leave. Great legends like Julius Caesar, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Mark Twain and many others practiced keeping a diary, which in turn offered rich insights into the personal lives of these figures who in their own unique way helped to transform the world.

If you are worried if someone would wander into your paper diary territory, try digitalizing! There are many free diary apps, like Daybook, available in your app store, which provides a new level of security that is not available in physical diaries.
