The Law

Of diminishing returns.

Photograph thanks to Julie Beasley in memory of her beloved son, Justin.

How much is lost and then forgotten
And has fallen through the cracks
A new idea and life-begotten
That is gone forever in unwanted tax.

A fragile ecology hurting
From manmade lust for wealth
Meaningless taking and flirting
The future is dismembered by stealth.

Depositions of sense and gravity
Lost then never found
Consumed by appetites of depravity
That never gets off the ground.

Calls for fiscal restrictions
Obsessions for budgets in the black
Logic full of contradictions
Good sense, easing through the crack.

What of, our children’s future?
The sea rises, and the planet burns
An ineffectual suture
The law of diminishing returns.
