So What’s New? — iPhones and the Future of Mobile Devices.
While I’m still personally getting adjusted to my iPhone 6+, which was a reasonable replacement from my previously broken iPhone 6, the headlines of Apple’s latest reveal for the next series in the line of iPhones is in, highlighting the 10th anniversary since the first iPhone was debuted by Steve Jobs. Here’s a couple of key things that I pointed out from my observations from these devices.
The Hefty Price Tag
Off the bat, let’s look at the price for these next phones in line.
Yikes…
You can practically purchase a remodeled 2015 macbook or 2 old HP 13 inch laptops with the amount the money the iPhoneX costs.
With a rolling twitter buzz circulating around the iPhone’s look and increased price tag, along with Apple’s updated website to showcase, it seems as though Apple is striking in the big bucks while it can. Being a #1 money generating giant in this industry, you can only expect a run to go for so long.
“Old But New” Specs
Neowin’s article perfectly summarizes the main specs and price for the iPhone 8, iPhone 8+ and iPhone X.
Here are the key features that all three phones have listed:
- Hexa-core A11 Bionic chip with neural engine and M11 motion coprocessor
- True Tone display
- 4K video recording at 24fps and 60fps (30fps existed previously)
- Slo-mo video at 1080p 240fps
- FLAC audio support
- Wireless Qi charging
- Fast charging (up to 50% charge in 30 minutes)
That fast charging bit is definitely a plus right? No more standing by for almost an hour and half waiting until a full charge for your iPhone anymore. Below is a nice hands on view of the new features from the iPhone 8 courtesy of TechCrunch.
My guess is that the iPhone X seen below may be the last version of a next gen mobile device that we see, since hardware capabilities of devices are most likely going to mirror other smart phones (like Samsung’s Galaxy series, or Google’s Pixel phones). The competition will then move to software platform, and the OS game.
A Focus on Photography and Augmented Reality
I drew some great insight from reading Time’s most recent article about these new phones. The engineers at Apple have carefully crafted a well defined approach on building an experience behind VR and the camera lens. Specialized image processors, along with the future development of VR apps and photo filters, make the future of iPhone photography pretty eventful.
Even if you’re an amateur photographer or videographer or developer, the iPhone 8 and iPhone X is changing the game at a much faster pace. Interactivity for social events and the VR world using these devices will be the norm and will blowup in almost every sector.
Conclusion
In my opinion, it seem as though there is not going to be enough significant changes for the less technologically inclined to settle the high expectations of Apple or enough momentum to move a differentiating interest in smartphones.
It may just “seem like” an upgraded iPhone, and we may be coming to a close on Apple’s churning of top tier smartphones, but that won’t stop millions of people from standing in lines to purchase these from the nearby Apple store…or the previous versions gathering dust in the back stocks of Apple.
