The second week of April 1988, brings several now very familiar titles plus the second issue of Manhunter and the debut of John Byrne’s final strange look into the history of Superman’s friends and loved ones. We’ve got a lot of books to cover, so let’s dive right in.

Checkmate #5 by Paul Kupperberg, Steve Erwin, Art Thibert, and Al Vey

We start the issue with a reminder that Harry Stein has two sons when they visit him at work, albeit in the cover business for Checkmate! Stein gets pulled away long enough to authorize a mission in Dallas with connections to the arms trade and the Italian mission from the previous issue.

A local knight named Jake Tyler is investigating local “businessman” M.T. Cavanaugh for his ties to the crime. He doubles as a local reporter even though up until this point it didn’t seem like Knights were placed anywhere long term.
