This week, my focus was on understanding the dual needs of energy efficiency and refurbishment in community buildings. I visited two significant sites: The Witham in Barnard Castle and the Horden Youth and Community Centre in Horden.

The Witham, a vibrant arts centre, is a hub of cultural activities and community engagement. During my visit, I sat and discussed in detail with Amy, Centre Director, to understand their operational challenges and the support they require. The building, though well-maintained, is aging and in need of various upgrades to enhance energy efficiency. Key areas identified include improving insulation, upgrading heating systems, and installing energy-efficient lighting. These measures are crucial not only for reducing operational costs but also for lowering the carbon footprint, aligning with broader environmental goals.

In addition to energy efficiency, the Witham requires structural refurbishments. The roof, in particular, needs urgent attention to prevent leaks. By addressing these issues, we can ensure the building remains a safe, welcoming space for the community.

Horden Youth and Community Centre presents a different set of challenges. This 105-year-old building is a testament to the community’s history but shows significant signs of wear and tear. During my visit, I observed issues such as lighting that was only partly LED, evidence of poor insulation, and heating that was fully electric. These problems result in high energy costs and detract from resources that the centre can use for its users. It was also evident that the roof was in extensive need of refurbishment and is currently causing a huge amount of damage to the internal walls and plaster.

Both visits underscored the importance of supporting community buildings with tailored solutions that address both energy efficiency and necessary refurbishments. These improvements not only enhance the comfort and usability of the buildings but also contribute to their financial sustainability and environmental responsibility. Moving forward, we will continue to support both the Witham and Horden Youth and Community Centres, ensuring they continue to serve their communities effectively and sustainably.
