So, who knew ‘seasonal charades/Pictionary’ would be such a good indication of how well our team know each other…?!

The fun of Christmas is truly here at DCA; our annual team time together (with lovely Christmas lunch) was once again enjoyed by all.

I do try to reflect on how everyone feels about Christmas team events (not always fun for everyone…) and think about the social anxiety that can sometimes manifest through any type of team activity, especially when it’s ‘all about fun’. This year we added a new dimension with a game of Christmas Carol Charades (or Pictionary if miming wasn’t your thing…neither appeared to be my bag!) and it was amazing to see how little ‘acting/drawing’ was needed before the correct guesses flew across the room!! Fun in watching, fun in doing, fun in guessing, fun in quietly observing….no pressure to perform but a great feeling of ‘team-ness’ and a dose of hilarity. I’m thankful for such a great bunch.

Recently, I was listening to an article on the radio about ‘imposter syndrome’ and thinking about the perceptions others have about us apposed to the way in which we see ourselves. We all have inner doubt and wonder about the actual difference we are making as we plough through our daily lives but as I watch our team hard at work, in times of uncertainty and also whilst having Christmas fun, it is clear that each one makes a real difference to all those they encounter. They make a difference to each other (they are such a supportive lot…reading the collective Durham Community Writers articles makes this clear!), they make a difference to the people who seek our support (again…read the articles, they do superb work!) and they make a real difference to me. I’m so proud of the magnitude of themes, issues, places, programmes, and projects this wonderful team can deliver across with such impact.

So, my ‘New Year’ challenge to the team, is to take the time to quietly tell each other when they notice that difference being made; reflect and empower with direct reminders of how effective they are being. We all need that! It helps us balance that voice of doubt and uncertainty in our heads, to adjust from the deficit approach, to shine a light on the positive and empowers us to learn from one another.

It’s amazing that Secret Santa knew I’d like a goal setting journal for Christmas!!

Wishing all a restful seasonal holiday.
