Why we started this business

About 3 years ago I moved to Singapore to join a large multinational nutrition business. I was tasked to establish and run their eCommerce operations for South East Asia.

Starting up a whole new business operation in a large organization like that is never easy, but I was undeniably fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. Ecommerce in South East Asia was just picking up steam and those who were willing to lean in and play the game right, had a great chance to get ahead and gain a competitive advantage.

By doing a few things right and fast, we enjoyed an (unprecedented in my career) exponential growth month over month, with our sales almost quadrupled year after year and our sales projection looked unbelievably steep.

Still, our key questions were “What are our competitors doing? Are we moving faster or slower than them? Are we leading or following our category’s online growth?” And while we were able to observe some of their major activations online or read some news about their ambitious partnerships and bold visions, there were no established benchmarks or credible data sources available to help us assess and understand where we stand in our markets.

This is where the idea about Digital Commerce Intelligence started. Starting by asking: is there a way to understand my total online market size and growth potential? Is there a way to measure online market share among my key competitors within my category? Is there a tool to notify me of my competitors’ online commercial activities around the 4Ps in real-time? Is there a tool to help me plan and predict how I can win in my online market?

That business need, created a business idea that I immediately put to work. Singapore is a great place to start a business (especially an AI / Data business). The research and funding rounds were carried out with great efficiency and about 8 months later, we successfully established a small scale POC (proof of concept), which led us to a larger scale pilot with a multinational FMCG client and releasing the first stable version of our tool ready for launch in early 2019.

We are also very fortunate to be located at Level3 and the Unilever Foundry, where we can tap into the expertise of data-related businesses like DEX, leverage breakthrough data-sharing blockchain technologies like the Ocean Protocol and exchange ideas and knowledge with many like-minded Consumer Goods professionals and businesses on the floor.
