Throughout 2021 dcSpark has scaled up its role in the Urbit ecosystem from a nascent contributor to now being one of the predominant companies in the ecosystem.

We only started developing in the ecosystem in the 2nd half of the year, yet managed to accomplish numerous feats in such a short time frame. These include:

  1. Transforming the web browser into a first class Urbit client via Urbit Visor.
  2. Released the very first Urbit Web App, Urbit Dashboard.
  3. Designed and implemented the Authenticate With Urbit ID auth protocol which allows Web2 sites/apps/services to utilize users’ Urbit ID as a login method.
  4. Open sourced various small hoon-based projects (from libraries to a chat bot) to help provide new hoon developers more examples to learn from.
  5. Provided actionable feedback about the key improvements needed to be added to streamline the external app developer experience to make it easier for new devs to hit the ground running without hitches.

All of the above were possible with an extremely lean team inside of dcSpark. Moving into 2022, we are expanding our team with several new hires in order to take the next step in our ambitious plans to develop many of the key projects that will enable Urbit to flourish (which we will start to drip more info about in the upcoming future).

Given that we as a company have decided to take a larger role in the ecosystem on the development front, likewise we decided to take the next obvious step and join the Urbit Galactic Senate. In other words (for those of you not up to date in Urbit lingo), dcSpark is proud to announce that we have acquired the ~dux galaxy.

This means that dcSpark now owns one of the 256 root identities of Urbit (an NFT), and this allows us to take part in the governance of the project. This will enable us to have a larger impact on the ecosystem which we are going to be spending significant resources building, and as such will help to align our goals with the future of what Urbit is to become.

2021 was truly a great year for Urbit. Much of the core infrastructure was laid down that transformed Urbit from something theoretical into a project that had sufficient foundations for products to start being built on top of. This infrastructure work is still in progress, but we at dcSpark are excited to be a part of this.

Moving into 2022 we aim to push adoption of Urbit by focusing on drastically simplifying, streamlining, and improving the end developer and end user experiences. What we have managed to accomplish with Urbit Visor is merely a first step, with much more in the works that will begin to unlock the functionality of Urbit for everyone.
