In the year 1931, a movie “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”. The storyline is that of a kind doctor Dr. Jekyll who had always known about two kinds of personalities every person carries, the “good” and the “bad”. Dr. Jekyll developed a potion that unleashed the wild personality he carried inside him. The wild version of him was called Mr. Hyde. While Dr. Jekyll was good and kind mannered, Mr. Hyde was the exact opposite yet resident in Dr. Jekyll’s body.

In 2003, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was released, a movie that feature Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Whenever Dr. Jekyll looked in a reflective surface, he saw the “bad” man in himself. The “bad” man in him always took over him whenever he took the transformation potion.

It’s easy to say such stories can only be found in movies and they remain what they are, stories. A look around us today will bring to light some people we have always thought to be good and blameless, but something happens that unleashes in evil in them. Some people of unquestionable characters have been caught in some very questionable acts. For instance, a priest caught in the act of adultery, a physician that sells babies born in his maternity institution. A professor that carries out harmful experiments on his students. A Chief Cop engrossed in corrupt acts. The instances stated above show us how possible it is for a person considered good to be found guilty of some acts.

Every human has in him/her a latent ability of carrying out evil acts. This includes myself and yourself. Just like Dr. Jekyll saw the wild part of himself whenever he looked in a reflective surface, we also can look into the mirrors of our mind with all sincerity and see the evils we are capable of. Think on those things you do when no one is around, those things you do where no one knows you, things you think up in your heart and dare not mention it to anyone else, ponder on these, don’t they reveal the Mr. Hyde in you and me?
An ancient prophet once wrote, “the heart of man is desperately wicked, who can know it?”.

One day, I thought to myself that there are neither good people nor bad, we are but a function of our thoughts and things we experience.

Last night I got a friend’s message of a story about an elderly man having a chat with his grandson, the following dialogue came up.

Man: at any given time, there are always two wolves fighting in every man, a bad one which depicts envy, laziness, anger and all negativity, a good one which depicts love, joy, peace and all ‘positivity’.
Son: so which one wins?
Man: the one you feed most.

We should learn to be in charge of our thoughts, our thoughts determine our actions. The more positive we are in our thoughts, the better our decisions and actions. All these make us the better person we should be.

Think good, act good, be good!
