Floyd Mayweather Jr. Fails to Rule out Amir Khan as Next Opponent

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has discussed the prospect of facing Amir Khan in his next fight, claiming he knows the British boxer “comes and fights” in each of his bouts, according to ESPN on Monday.

Mayweather remained non-committal as to whether or not he will face the Bolton-based brawler any time soon, instead revealing he knows little about the 27-year-old and his prospects for the future, per BoxingScene:

“I really don’t know too much about Amir Khan.

But I do know, every time out, the guy comes and fights. If he is the guy, then he’s the guy [to fight next]. There’s nothing I can do but go out there and execute the game plan and dedicate myself to the craft, which is boxing.”

“Money” remains dignified in his response, showing clear respect for the fighter who lost back-to-back encounters with Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia across the past two years (per BoxingScene): “I think he’s a young, strong champion. I call all these guys champions. I call them champions because even when they get knocked down they get back up and give it their best.”

Although Khan’s loss to Peterson remains tenuous to this day — fueled by the American’s failed drug test after the rematch was scheduled, per BBC Sport — Khan has done well to get his career back on track with victories over Carlos Molina and JulioDiaz in recent times.

The confident Englishman rarely shies away from a challenge and has tried to provoke Mayweather into an angry response across recent weeks, claiming he “will not be dictated to” when working out the stipulations of the potential fight, per NickLustig of the Daily Star.

While Mayweather is yet to react to such strategy, neither man has their next opponent set. Showtime Sports boss Stephen Espinoza, who signed Mayweather to a six-fight deal in February, believes the unbeaten icon’s next showdown will be revealed in the New Year, per Kurt Badenhausen of Forbes.

The speculation will continue until then, but right now, Khan appears as likely as anyone to cement a clash with Mayweather.
