Kates Work Days | By Amy Hurst

I spent a day with Kate to understand how she does a full day of parcelling and working from home. On this occasion it happened to be the school holidays so Ozzy was there for the first half and she found it really difficult to get anything done without being distracted or even just making sure he was alright. Once her mum had come around to fetch Ozzy I was able to see what she did with her days when making her parcels and creating her pieces.

Every piece is created using a variety of good quality products as Kate says this might make her price steeper but she does think of quality over quantity and that it will help make her products last. I firstly watched her put a butterfly frame together she did however make it look too easy, I do know if I gave it a try it wouldn’t come out quite the same!

Variety of Dead Butterflies Ready For Framing

She has a large frame filled with butterflies of a variety of style, colour and species to me it means nothing however Kate was able to tell me every species she was giving a customer and it was crazy because species of butterflies for me go as far as the colour of them.

On this occasions she only had butterfly frames for deliveries so once she had finished and put the butterflies in there frames she began to package them. Not only does the butterfly frame look beautiful but she even packages them with some twine and flowers, a card and sometimes a bit of wrapping paper. Everything she does becomes a form of art and really excels her products making them well presented and beautifully made!

Kate Making her Butterflies Beautiful

When she had finished packing them all there was no time to talk she had to be out of the house and down to the post office. Before I could even stutter she handed me a parcel to carry as she had 5 large bags and we were off up to the post office. Once arriving at the post office she has to weigh every parcel, jot down where each parcel is going and to remember to keep the receipt for proof of posting. As she’s sending 20–30 parcels every week as you can imagine she’s on first name terms with all the post office staff.

Although you might think well, she’s sent off the parcels now she has the rest of the day to enjoy herself this is not the case at all. Once she has sent of the parcels she has to visit the arts & craft store which is only round the corner to stock up on more paper, glue, paint brushes all sorts of bits and bobs to create her work. She then offered to show me here empty store space which I didn’t ever imagine to be as big as it was, it was huge!

There were 4 different rooms one which she called her soon to be office, one large room upstairs for her pieces to be shown in and a smaller storage room which she suggested was going to be a room for her to ‘taxidermy’ if you know what I mean. I didn’t take many photographs as there wasn’t a lot to see but I did get some photographs of the furniture upstairs which is been kept on behalf of Kate to sell with her products.
