Treacle Market in Macclesfield | By Amy Hurst

Customers looking at Kate’s stall, Treacle Market.

Treacle Market is a large collection of various market stalls, in the town centre of Macclesfield. It takes place on the last Sunday of each month, apart from December when it always falls on the Sunday before Christmas. The market started in 2010 and has continued to thrive for 6 years.

Since Kate’s business started in 2015, she has been attending and taking part in the markets ever since and can confidently say it is one of her favourite markets to participate in, with the crowd it brings. Taking part allows her to see all the other local businesses as well, including: florists, food producers, arts & craft, jewellers and many more.

After visiting the other markets that Kate takes part in, I would say this is the busiest and probably the one where I have seen her sell the most stuff, also gaining a lot of interest from a variety of different people. When I visited her at the treacle market she had sold and continued to sell a variety of things ranging from her butterfly frames to a large stag head. I was shocked to find people buying the large stag heads at just a local market with the prices starting at £100 or more.

After spending time with Kate and just talking to her about the market I wondered round to look at all the variety of other stalls. I was shocked to find how large the actual even was the stalls went on for ages in every direction. Although I didn’t find the time to wonder and have a good look at every single stall, there were a few that I did find interesting one of the stalls sat right opposite Kate’s that day. It was a home décor stall with beautiful vintage and unique bits that were all displayed wonderfully. I definitely found it difficult not buying everything when visiting these market events!

Stag wreath made by hand

With it being December time when I visited Treacle market a lot of her pieces were Christmas inspired, her stall felt festive and so did the rest of the market, it really started to kick December off for me. She has wreaths which had been changed into antler wreathes, glittery berries and festive colours, it really was beginning to look at like ‘Dead’ Christmas for Kate and her business. All her wreaths were made by hand also which I think made them extra special and unique.

In my opinion this was one of the most enjoyable markets because you could see how truly inspired and lovely everyone was at the market. Having met some of Kate’s friends she also seemed a lot more relaxed and on form at this market. Having a wonderful display of work for people to look at!
